I think it might be hard to portray a female character running from bullies because female bullies are more emotionally abusive.

Sure as hell can't be modern because social media bullying would look silly as hell.

This comment is silly. First, because the girl could be running from boys still. Second, I know plenty of girls that got physically bullied, both by boys and other girls. Third, physical bullying is not a thing of the past. It's not like social media or cyber-bullying replaced other forms of bullying, it just added to the misery.

Kids still feel the need to run away from emotional bullying. And since there are kids who have committed suicide thanks to social bullying, I don't think that would be silly at all.

The physical act of running away is the least important thing about Bastian's bullying. Even in the movie, they managed to emphasize that his problem is escapism and mentally running away from his problems.

With all due respect, I don't think your imagination is up to par if you can't think of a similar scenario with a female protagonist. As bio_obscura said, the literal running away wasn't the point of Bastien's character arc, it was just one small detail. It's the escapism and finding sanctuary through reading that's the main theme here, and there's no reason why that wouldn't work with a girl as well as a boy.

anon, seriously? i'm female and was emotionally bullied by male bullies as a kid and physically bullied by a female bully. experiences vary.

Yeah, OK, tell that to the bully who kicked me down two flights of stairs at my middle school.

I think the family of the girl who was murdered by a pack of other girls in a high school bathroom would beg to differ. Or the girl who was stabbed by the other two girls who claimed Slenderman told them to do it. Or...

Well. You get the idea.

Okay, so you've accidentally tripped on a pet peeve of mine, which is calling various mean or violent acts bullying, when they aren't. Slenderman stabbing? That's attempted murder, not bullying. Bullying, by definition, is ongoing. It's a campaign of harassment and aggression.

Murder, by definition, is a one time event.
