[The NeverEnding Story]

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling there'd be a very Ghostbuster-esque backlash, though

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Only in the case of Neverending Story, that would be justified since it is based on a preexisting property. Plus, pre-teen awkgirl flees mean girl cheerleaders, fucking seen that so often there is even less new material to mine than jocks chase bookworm.

Don't think Toxic Nerddom cares nearly as much about this

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
So what you're saying is that any and all complaints about any aspect would be glossed over as sexism and dismissed as such?

But Ghostbusters was awesome and a successful movie? Who cares about the angry nerdboys? That's like the worst reason not to do something. If anything, angry nerdboys are the reason things should be done.

I think it might be hard to portray a female character running from bullies because female bullies are more emotionally abusive.

Sure as hell can't be modern because social media bullying would look silly as hell.

This comment is silly. First, because the girl could be running from boys still. Second, I know plenty of girls that got physically bullied, both by boys and other girls. Third, physical bullying is not a thing of the past. It's not like social media or cyber-bullying replaced other forms of bullying, it just added to the misery.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Kids still feel the need to run away from emotional bullying. And since there are kids who have committed suicide thanks to social bullying, I don't think that would be silly at all.

The physical act of running away is the least important thing about Bastian's bullying. Even in the movie, they managed to emphasize that his problem is escapism and mentally running away from his problems.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
With all due respect, I don't think your imagination is up to par if you can't think of a similar scenario with a female protagonist. As bio_obscura said, the literal running away wasn't the point of Bastien's character arc, it was just one small detail. It's the escapism and finding sanctuary through reading that's the main theme here, and there's no reason why that wouldn't work with a girl as well as a boy.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
anon, seriously? i'm female and was emotionally bullied by male bullies as a kid and physically bullied by a female bully. experiences vary.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, OK, tell that to the bully who kicked me down two flights of stairs at my middle school.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think the family of the girl who was murdered by a pack of other girls in a high school bathroom would beg to differ. Or the girl who was stabbed by the other two girls who claimed Slenderman told them to do it. Or...

Well. You get the idea.

Eh, I would definitely love an escapist fantasy story about a bullied girl, but enooooouuuugh with the remakes. Just make something new, rather than try to cash in on nostalgia in order to tell your story.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I am so sick of "remakes" and "reimaginings."

Make. Something. New. Instead of piggybacking on something already established.

The actual book has so many "But that's another story for another time" hooks that I find it hard to believe there isn't one with a female in the lead role. Maybe expand on one of those?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
The only remake I would want to see would be animated. Honestly, Studio Ghibli would do a pretty good job of it.

It's been a while since I read the book but isn't his name important? They made a point of giving his full name a few times.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
After what they did to Howl's Moving Castle, I don't want Ghibli touching it.

I'm so torn on this. Because hell yes is my first reaction to imagining The Neverending Story with girl!Bastion. But also no because that movie holds such a special place in my heart. I love everything about it.

So maybe not a remake, but another story in the same universe? There was a lot left to explore in that world/book.

Would Atreyu be a girl too?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
He would have to be. And a Childlike Emperor.

I don't want a remake, I want a new adaptation that follows the book and covers the whole story, because the whole story is wonderful. If it had a girl protagonist I wouldn't care, just as long as it hits the same story beats and everything. (Though that said, I suddenly found myself thinking adaptation with Boy!Bastion but Girl!Atreyu and shoehorned-in love story and okay /that/ would be a no.)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather someone wrote a new, original story starring a young girl with similar themes of bullying and escaping reality. One, there's no risk of repeating the Ghostbusters remake hate circus, and two, girls are worth having stories written for them. Surely you don't have to take a story featuring a boy and replace him with a girl if you want to create a good, impactful story with a girl protagonist?

[personal profile] fishnchips 2017-03-10 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I mean, it's entirely possible to write new original stories with female characters, feels a bit like a lazy cop-out to just take stories with male characters and replace them with female characters. Makes it seem like female characters are only good for badly rehashed male centric stories.
