03. Already been said, but anybody who doesn't like a series because there's no sex (or because of what pairing ended up canon, besides obvious exceptions like when it actually is random or out of character) gets a big huge "WTF" from me.

04. Agreed so hard. It's like his "dream scene"- I cry more during that bit than most other parts of the show. And that expression on his face makes me a sad bunny inside. ):

06. You know, for a lot of series, the original source material is not perfect, some of the characters are not as fully explored as they could be and never WILL be... not to mention that, you know, the default setting for everybody in the world is not 'STRAIGHT UNTIL PROVEN GAY' (in before BUT BISEXUALITY IS IMAGINARY- *shot*).

But mostly, I guess my advice would be to just- stay away from the majority of fandom. You want to be part of something that is 99% MADE OF the things you have a burning hatred for? Fandom IS fanfiction, fanart, noncanonical pairings, and a ton of other stuff that... isn't the main canon. If you just want the main canon, just- watch/read the main canon. Because you know, even discussing a character's motivations and trying to dig deeper into motivations and underlying themes among your friends is non-canon- you're reading stuff into the original source material that isn't right there plainly stated.

Short version: I don't hate you, but yes, in a fandom environment, I think most people would rightfully think you're not much fun to interact with, if you hate what fandom is.

10. ... I usually slam people who respond with things like this, SO LET ME PHRASE IT REALLY CAREFULLY. I don't respect you or your opinion any less, per se? But that end slam on Haibane Renmei, which I believe WAS something incredible, and I don't know the show in your secret, but I'm preeeeetty sure we have severely different tastes, so I'm just going to discard your opinion on it until/unless I see it and form an opinion myself.

12. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PIKACHU EPISODE. >E No, seriously, I was sad with the Butterfree, but I bawled like a dork when Ash left Pikachu behind. The song still makes me cry. /lame

15. Haha, I know how you feel. I get told a TON of movies are horrible, but I... like most of them. ): Just differing tastes, people, geez. (I haven't seen that movie, but my god everyone hates Bewitched... XD;)

17. I- I cried then, and might not cry now, but I do know how you feel at least. D: Sad scene is sad.

20. *ignores the rest of the secret, because couldn't care less* CLOVERFIELD ♥

22. Jonathan Coulton can have my babies. Even if he eats them. :| LOVE HIS STUFF, I swear.

26. Ignoring your secret purely because I have nothing to say, I agree that she is gorgeous ♥

28. Is this a repeat? I've seen it before. >_> Either way, I sympathise. I regret leaving ju-jitsu, though not due to any characters per se. D:

30. Either a troll or a retard or both! But I'll be nice and feed you anyway: GTFO, those kids apparently worked harder than you to be able to draw, if you feel threatened by them- you don't just find talent lying in the street, and they deserve whatever level they worked to get to. And you apparently deserve to be a loser. *golf claps*

31. Honey, if the writers were concerned with pandering to any part of their fanbase instead of telling the story they wanted to tell/that needed to be told, they kind of suck anyway. Do we have to pull out whatever-your-fandom-is versions of the HARRY POTTER IS NOT A DEMOCRACY icons?

32. Not in your fandom, but I too ship everyone with everyone and anyone else in quite a few of mine, so I feel ya there. XD

35. Elitists suck no matter what the fandom. Just try to ignore them and do what you want to have fun, that's what it's all about ♥

44. Code Geass has some of the lulziest animation moments of any anime ever. But since I've seen you reply to people saying that no, you just hate all of the art, the entire style, etc, I have to say: some people can praise the art of that show because, surprise, some people like the art of that show. You don't. They do. I don't see the problem here.

Which Pikachu episode are you talking about?

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
The one where they find a group of wild Pikachu in the woods and Ash's Pikachu seems really happy to see them and gets a crush on one of the girl Pikachu, and Ash assumes that it would be better for Pikachu for him to be with his own kind and that he'd be happier that way. He runs away and cries and there's this CHEESY MONTAGE (http://youtube.com/watch?v=j-kFSCS-egk) of all the happy times they had with a cheesy song, and then Pikachu comes after him and they reunite and it's really sappy-sweet.

... Wow, I haven't even seen that episode in like... eight-to-ten years or so, either. XD; It was one of the EARLY-early ones, too, episode 39 of the first season. Durp. ;;

28's OP

(Anonymous) 2008-05-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a repeat. It was a couple of days ago in the "Too Big" section, because I submitted the wrong file instead of the small version, but fixed it as soon as I noticed.

Ah, okay then! I just knew I'd seen it before recently, and that explains it. =D Good luck getting back into dancing if you decide to!

Actually, pandering to various parts of the fanbase is very common in anime (less common and less obvious in western TV, but it's still there). It's commonly called fanservice, y'know? Seriously - what do you think why does every Gundam since Wing feature a cast of increasingly prettier boys? Because their prettiness is important to the story? Also, why is it that most of these boys practically have "draw doujinshi about us!" tattooed on their forehead? Or there's Code Geass which is basically Fanservice Paradise, pandering to male and female viewers alike with all kinds of shameless fanservice and subtext so obvious it's basically text? And what about people behind the Macross franchise suddenly deciding the franchise is in a dire need of loli and moe and pretty boys (just to be safe)? And let's not mention all those moe shows which are basically a means of saying "look at how cute these girls are, now fap then go and buy the merchandise."

Rest assured, writers and producers know their audience and know what the audience wants to see. And sometimes they, y'know, decide to pander in order to gain more viewers. After all, it's entertainment but it's also a business.

Of course writers and creaters pander to the audience in some ways. Anybody creating any art tries to do something that will be accepted and appreciated, or will be successful. But you're mistaking my point. Designers design characters to be attractive to appeal, yes. They do pantyshots in series. They put in UST and sometimes "slash fanservice" on purpose (though a lot of the times fangirls can read in fanservice and UST and "hints" without even the help of the creators). Writers and producers can even decide to put in a plot point because they audience DOES like a particular pairing, or decide to expand a character's role because they are unexpectedly popular.

The way the OP is phrasing things, s/he is pretty much saying that the writers had been hinting at the pairing and were probably planning to include that pairing, except they decided to change what they had planned out just to appeal to the bad ol' slash fans. This could be the case. But I doubt it. That doesn't seem much different to me than the Harry/Hermione fans in Harry Potter- not all of them, mind, just the ones that DID this- saying that Harry/Hermione WOULD have been canon except that Rowling was "unfair" and listened to the Ron/Hermione fans more and showed them special treatment. (And before anybody jumps in with "LULZ BUTTHURT" or "YOU SEEM INVESTED IN THAT WANK," I'm not even in the Harry Potter fandom and never have been, thanks, that was just some epic wank there.)

I mean, think about it. Sanely. Your point's valid, but think about your favorite series and one of the couples that became canon in it. And picture part of the fanbase ranting that the only reason it's canon instead of their OTP is because it always had more fans and the writers were just pandering to those fans. That's almost patently ridiculous. There's a difference between pretty or cute character designs and "hints" and UST and panty shots/big boobs/putting in certain character designs, and even going with the flow on what's popular when you don't have anything really different planned out, and the idea that they went "Well, we were gonna have these two hook up, but look at all these fanartists and fic writers! We know which way the fandom wind is blowing!"

Also, I'm not sure if it applies, but assuming the OP is in the English fandom? I'm doubting the opinions of the English fandom really had any impact on the series over in Japan at all. S/he might be saying that s/he resents that the Kyouichi/Hiyuu fans are also the most prominent in Japan, but such complaints are rarely that well thought out. Could happen, though.
