Find a pattern similar to what you want and modify it, or find a couple different patterns and combine elements from each. It isn't that hard and practice helps. Lots of problems can be solved by thinking them through. Also, get a bunch of the really cheap muslin fabric that's like a dollar a yard and practice on that to see how it'll turn out before making the final thing.

Haha, that sounds like a bunch of work for just one costume, but I love it.
