I maintain that this movie is a good superhero movie with a lot of good stuff in it but it's not a Superman movie. I'm glad this version inspired you, but it would've been better if they'd used another superhero. What's in the movie is not Superman. I would've been happy with the character if they weren't trying to pretend he was something he's not. The only reason to make this Superman and not any of the more fitting superheroes is just name recognition. Superman doesn't have to be for everyone. If stripping away the core of the character is the only way to sell Superman these days (and I maintain it's not), then they shouldn't try to make Superman movies.

It's a little like Maleficent. I liked the movie but I just couldn't disconnect with them trying to make my favorite villain into a hero. I would've loved it if she was just some other random fairy and it was just a different retelling of Sleeping Beauty, unconnected to Disney's version. It was interesting but not Maleficent.

I really agree with you, and especially your comment about Maleficent. The movie isn't great, but I actually kind of liked it - or rather, I liked the film I saw hiding in it, that got drowned out by the fact that it was a "Maleficent" movie. As an original fairy or an original take on Sleeping Beauty, I think it could have actually been pretty cool, and then it wouldn't have been shackled to the original Disney film.

And I agree with you so much about Superman. It's just... not what his character's about.

Displaying that goodness was a consistent choice Clark/Superman had to actively make was one of the few things I liked about Man of Steel, so I feel you, OP. I haven't seen BvS, so idk anything about that theme's continuation there.

The second two things there don't strike me as being very Supermanesque, or really as being very interesting on a human level. There's something profoundly elitist about it, and while you could argue that there's something basically elitist about Superman conceptually, I don't think leaning into it and making it so central really helps. It's much less interesting to me. And there's also a contradiction there between the idea of Superman being flawed and trying to do the right thing and fucking it up, and the idea that his failures are due to the ignorance of those he helps.

I don't know. I'm glad you enjoy it. Not for me.

I'll just leave this "Superman is Jewish" meta here in case anyone finds it as fascinating as I did.

It's a little odd. It almost feels like this shouldn't have to be said because it feels like one of the basic foundational elements of the characters (although I'm a little skeptical about some of the analysis, especially their reading of the complexity of Christian moral thought). And yet it also sounds like one of the things that people on here endlessly rant about and say is absurd and how people are SJWs - an example of the kind of "coding" that people on here hate for some reason I don't understand.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the exact opposite of Christianity element in this analysis, because sometimes Christianity focuses on helping others...but there is a definite element in Judiasm (as I understand it) that says "save one person, save the world," meaning that even if you only make one small difference for good in the world, it matters. It will always matter--even if you don't "save souls" and "right all the wrongs and defeat all the evils." IDK. It just gave me a lot to think about.

I've never been extremely into superheroes, but on whatever level I do and can enjoy them, Superman always made more fundamental sense to me than Batman. Batman is "dark and edgy" while Superman just really tries his best all the time. He doesn't skulk around hiding in his cave and behind his wealth; he tries to save the world, even if that's one person at a time.

I'm kind of a bleeding heart a lot of times, so that philosophy just appeals to me more.

BTW I'm Christian not Jewish, just find all of this very interesting

Yeah, I don't think it's entirely wrong - I think that Christian analysis probably does tend to be more milleniarian and absolutist, and less pragmatic and constrained - it's just a really big simplification.

I definitely agree wrt finding Superman more interesting than Batman!

I think there's a fundamental difference between "coding" and between Jewish creators creating a superhero that's specifically exemplifying certain aspects of Judaism.
Superman's not meant to be an allegory for Jewish people, or "Jewish" himself, but he does have roots in Jewish ideas.

Though, I do think that some of the reactions you see here against the "coding" idea are to the more drastic examples of it (like adults being "child coded") rather than the concept itself.

I liked the part where he destroyed the douche's truck. Made me crave for a superhero whose heart is in the right place but is chaotic good in execution. Deadpool doesn't cut it.

What about Wolverine?
Though he's a bit too gruffly "I'm not a good guy", I guess.
I agree with you, though. I'd like to see that.

deadpool is chaotic good, as much as he desperately wishes he wasn't

You want a well-written and interesting Superman, check out the DCAU. I usually don't like the character at all but I like him there.
