I mean, I know you touch on this briefly, but: even setting aside any questions about money, the Academy Awards could never be objective, because art doesn't work that way

Indeed, so my problem with OP's claim is twofold. It's not like this is, say, some kind of sport where points are clearly decided. If someone who is also a rapist asshole piece of shit also wins a race, then he's the fastest no matter what we criticize him for. That's not the case with the Academy Awards at all.

I do agree that some people make good art and can be good actors despite being terrible people. But the Academy Awards is only loosely about that, considering all the shit going on there, and it's still a crap move to give a horrible person a microphone and a golden trophy and fawn over him.

Gymnastics has a subjective scoring system, but I'd still be a bit annoyed if they determined the gold medallist based on who has the best hair.

At least ostensibly, the Best Actor award should be for the best acting performance among the nominees (fundamentally subjective, but at the same time, not at all related to their personal character).

Gymnastics scoring isn't as subjective as you think. At least there's a pretty solid attempt to break it down in terms of what is worth how many points. It's not like they just come up with a completely random number.
