Based on #4

What movies, shows or books have hit way too close to home?

Re: Based on #4

- I really liked the show Raising Hope... until my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. For those of you who've never seen Raising Hope, the grandmother having Alzheimer's is one of the jokes (although it's also treated seriously). It just... wasn't funny anymore. Not that it ever really was, it always bothered me, but it was easier to overlook before.

- I knew of someone who lost their dog and their Godfather in the same short span of time. Then they read the fifth Harry Potter book. Yeah...

(For those of you who haven't read the books, yes, there's a reason that was a huge blow.)

I like that you're trying to hide the spoilers for the 5th Harry Potter book in 2017

AYRT - I can see why it would look that way, but no, that's not what I was doing. I just didn't see the need to rehash the entire book, so I kept it vague.

Anything with violence or sexual violence. I'm not an assault victim but it hits too close somehow. I feel like I'm there, experiencing it, and get a mild panic attack. I have to turn it off or walk away quickly unless I want to lose a day to panic and anxiety. It's not worth trying to overcome for me. I have real problems elsewhere

I started reading JK Rowling's Casual Vacancy about two weeks after my aunt died from a brain aneurysm, which one of the characters dies from in the very beginning of the book.

I couldn't finish the book.

Oh, man. :( I'm that way with stories that have certain illnesses in them. (Mostly cancer. And it's usually cancer.)

"Roseanne", after Dan has his heart attack. My dad suffered with heart problems, and eventually passed away as a result of them and other health issues. Combine that with the fact that Dan reminded me so much of my dad in terms of his personality and overall build and whatnot and...yeah. I can't really watch those episodes when they come on TV.

William and Randall dealing with cancer on This is Us. That relationship between a parent with cancer and a child trying to care for them through it hit way, way to close to home.

I'm so, so glad I never watched that show now. I had a feeling cancer would crop up, because that seems to be people's default angst factor anymore. (Which pisses me off because it means I pretty much avoid anything remotely dramatic these days.)

It's a really, really well done show and the cancer storyline was sensitively handled and didn't feel like cancer was just...stapled onto these characters, you know?

But yeah, dang, it was a heartbreaker and I cried so damn hard.

Mama in Dredd freaked me out. She looked like my ex-step mother who was an abusive monster.

Stuff with heartwarming messages about how lovely mother-daughter relationships are. I have a pretty good relationship with my mum, it's just that we're a bit too different and I found it hard to live in the same house as her most of the time. Stories like that just make me feel vaguely uncomfortable, like I should feel more for my mum than I do, especially when it's not like she's a bad person or anything.

Candyman. Not the first times I watched it. I rewatched it this Halloween and the final scene when the woman is all burnt up almost sent me into a panic attack. Between viewings, my neighbor tried to blow himself up in his house and I saw him when they pulled him out. It was horrific.

Good lord. Yeesh. Yeah, don't blame you for freaking out after seeing something like that.

It was one of those things that is so horrific, your mind can't process what you are seeing.

I would really prefer to not say what fandom this is, but the creepy loser villain's issues with being compared to other people and his overall low self-esteem hit far too close to home for me.

On that note, that's probably why I sometimes had trouble watching Alan-centric episodes of Two and Half Men, though, again, he's also a creepy loser and I would prefer not to say publicly that I can relate to him, either.

*You* aren't saying anything publicly, ecause you are anonymous.

The bullying storyline on Glee hit really close to home. Really, bullying storylines in general. I'm kind of glad Harry was the main character instead of Neville in Harry Potter, because Snape's bullying of Neville hit very close to home, and if Nevile had been more and front and center, I think I would have had to drop the books.

In a good way, I guess? I think Trainwreck: My Life as an Idoit probably precipitated me actually going to a psychologist and getting a diagnosis.

Laggies

I love it BECAUSE it's relatable, but I hate that I find it as relatable as I do.

Same! It doesn't help that I (in my late 20s) work with mostly girls who are 18-23.

When I was younger, I heard the song "Oh Where Can My Baby Be", and nearly cried when I thought of my mother as the character in the song.

To this day, it's the one nostalgic tune I don't put on my phone's playlist.

This hasn't happened to me personally but Mum has said she cannot watch "Black Swan" because a movie about psychological problems is difficult for her to watch.
