What movies/shows/games were you really hype for...

That disappointed you?

Empire. Started out great then became a "let's see how many celebrities we can cameo and plotlines we'll touch on once never to revisit in every episode" kind of deal.

Oh come on! Empire was a POS from the very beginning!

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. Part of it was me having expectations way too high, part of it was just that I found the game to be pretty lacking as a sequel on the whole.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. I was just starting to get invested when suddenly it was over. Major let-down after the awesomeness that was Lost Age.

SA - Trust me, you're not. Back in the day the backlash got so big that there was a backlash to the backlash and it was a mess. It wasn't as bad as some fandoms get (and I admit that I had a hand in the wank, much to my embarrassment now), but I do feel like there's a divide in the fanbase that's never going to go away, especially considering how unlikely a fourth game is. :(

Deadpool. I mean, it was okay, but the hype made it out to be more than just another superhero movie, and it really wasn't. And his girlfriend just became another damsel in distress which kinda annoyed me.

I felt like she was only "unusual" in the sense that she was a Cool Girlfriend stereotype. Oh, look, a hooker who's hot, but also like one of the guys!

The Revenant. It was a chore to get through. DiCaprio was by far the most boring part of the movie. I thought ever other character was more interesting.

Brave.

Rewatching it again....it's just slightly better than okayish.

Same. I wanted to like Brave SO MUCH. And just... it left me cold. Did nothing for me.

Waiting four years for A Feast for Crows to come out after a Storm of Swords, only to be met with its mediocrity, killed like 80% of the goodwill and passion that the first three ASOIAF books had built in me. Then waiting another 6 years for A Dance with Dragons only to get....that...well, fuck it.

Also, Boardwalk Empire in general, and then specifically, Michael Shannon's character.

Word. A Storm of Swords was tight, and of course you had the Red Wedding shocker so expectations were high for the next book. But by then the series had gotten really messy and all over the place. I think splitting up the POVs was a bad idea, too.

Same, the only characters I was interested in anymore were only in AFFC, so there was no draw for me to finish ADWD. (So I didn't.)

Honestly, I'm not even picking up ADWD until A Dream of Spring is out.

I read these books in 2012 and we're still not closer.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It feels strange to say this, but ASOIAF really does seem to start suffering from "too much plot" starting at ASOS, and it just becomes really blatantly obvious during AFFC and ADWD. And because of how spread out it gets, geographically, it becomes more and more difficult to maintain interest in whichever characters aren't your personal favorites, because now they aren't just boring, they're also far away from the people you care about and the action you're subsequently most invested in.

Right, looking back, I think it was whatever point at which I realized the Stark siblings were never going to reunite that really killed it for me because there was no longer an emotional end-point for all this drama to build toward. I don't give one pun-intended shit about Dany, or Tyrion, or Sam, then Arys Oakheart, all the various Martells, the 39 blighted Greyjoys, or whatever, who are all these new people and what the fuck do they have to do with anything, what happened to the characters I actually know?? And seemed to be central to the central story?? There used to BE a central story. Why am I supposed to give a shit about an Areo Hotah POV chapter when Jaime Lannister only gets one chapter in this entire book? Arya gets only two??

It has become a fantasy soap opera in the worst way: with infinitely spooling threads that had no shape to their plots or resolutions in sight but could be let to spin out eternally as old characters died out and new characters were brought in ad infinitum. LIKE....I don't have time for that shit.

I'm going to bed. :)

I loved it up to a point. I had (to my surprise) been a huge fan of Michael Pitt's acting and thought he was often better than Steve Buscemi in the same scene, and when he left, my interest in the show took a dive. Then it was revived somewhat, but then that bloody massacre scene with Bobby Cannavale happened, which was predictably staged so that the naked woman he was fucking would be killed and sprawled in a sexual position the camera could pan over, made me fed up with this dumbass macho bullshit. So shrugs all around.

The Hobbit. I was following all the buildup and casting news and such. Terrible movies.

Diablo 3, mostly because it ended up not having a PC-only version so I didn't end up getting it.

Criminal Minds Beyond Borders. I like the original a lot and I actually liked the first spinoff (it was getting into a groove when it was canceled) but this spinoff is very bland. Criminal Minds is more about the characters for me than anything else, and there's very little character development or chemistry in this show.

I was watching Criminal Minds Beyond Borders the other night with my mom. Well, I was playing on my tablet and somewhat listening to the show. It cut to a commercial and Mom asked if I was watching it. I said I wasn't and that I didn't care for it but couldn't pinpoint exactly why. She said she didn't like it either because it made her feel like she shouldn't travel to other countries.

-Spore. I enjoyed it up to the second stage, and then everything afterward was a watered-down version of a better game (like Civ or AoM). Whenever I play the game now, I just play in the second stage as much as I can and then quit.

-Pokemon ORAS. Too overhyped by Hoenn fans, imo. It was nowhere near as fun as HGSS or even FRLG, and the only real things I liked about it was Wally getting improvement and the Dexnav. Delta Episode was only redeemed by free Deoxys without an event; the rest of it was awful.

-Mighty No 9/No Man's Sky. Do I really need to explain? :(

-Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Mind, I still put an embarrassing number of hours into it. But, I was so HYPED for the main plot. In Hushed Whispers was SO GOOD (ugh Sera broke my heart and the whole 'traveling to the dark future thing' was just... I want that as the game, fuck the real Main Plot just give me the dark future). Red lyrium was so creepy, oh god, it's an infection and it's bursting up through the ground and getting worse and worse. And HOLY FUCK VENATORI ARE AWESOME.

And then we steam-rolled Corypheus a few hilariously anti-climactic times and it was over. :\

It's like every time the game tried to build the stakes, the writers were like "but wouldn't it be better if you were always winning?" Like a fucking Donald Trump speech, I literally got sick of winning all the time.

-Sims 4
I have hazy but fond memories of playing The Sims at a friend's house and I love sim games in general so I picked it up on launch. It's okay I guess, but I feel like I'm not enough of an asshole to really get any enjoyement out of it. My main dude's boyfriend lit himself on fire and died bc I couldn't figure out how to put him out, and that was really sad. And all the funny shit I remember doing as a kid like building a pool and removing the ladder, it just makes me feel bad for the little sim people. :( So I was playing as a benevolent god but it got old really fast.
