I just love the victim blaming going on here.

If someone is assaulted, even murdered it is NEVER the person's fault. It's not the parent's fault. It's NO ONE's fault but the person who decided to commit the crime. Personal responsibility blah blah blah. You do realise that the majority of murders occur in someone's own house, usually by someone they know and love?

Okay so the mother 'should have done this' or 'shouldn't have done this' according to your very judgmental mindset. If this is true and she'd done everything 'right' in your mind to protect her daughter, then the perp would have just found another victim.

This kind of attitude in society sickens me and, in fact, allows a lot of these assholes to get away with this stuff because everyone is too busy trying to look at the victim or the victim's family to find a way to blame them.

I wonder when this shift in perception happened. I'm Gen X and I remember getting "How Not To Be A Victim" lessons in school where we were taught basic things like "be aware of your surroundings," the buddy system, and "what bad people look for in an easy mark."

Now, there's this attitude that other people are responsible for your safety. It's everyone else's job not to hurt you instead of your job to do what you can to stay out of trouble. When and how did that happen?

I feel like there's a huge difference between 'it's your fault x happened to you' and 'please take reasonable precautions to keep yourself safe because there are bad people in the world'.

Of course it's always the perpetrator's choice to do something heinous, but having the common sense to know that bad people do bad things, so don't walk down a dark alley at 3am if you can help it isn't bad advice...
