16. You should. Though that is a rough death to get through, I think you'll find he's still there in spirit. :) There's a few episodes after his death that I didn't like as much, but I think the series as a whole was stronger for it. The series does a great job of allowing the viewers to cope with that loss along with the characters.

I got up to episode 17 or so before I quit. Simon was cool and all, but the show just wasn't fun without Kamina.

Also, I was still butt-hurt by the fact that Yoko got shafted because Gurren Lagann is too GAR to have lasting romance. -_- (Nia included)
