I happen to really like the manga recently--and I just posted a nice long rant about people not liking this. Oops? Were we supposed to keep it a secret? Eh. Whatever. To each their own, I guess. But I know a number of people who like it, so you're not alone, at least?

(I now think of Itachi thinking "why do you still love me? D:" every time he says something about Sasuke needing to hate him more. It makes me happy in the part of me that likes drama and angst and traumatized Uchihas.)

I would very much like to be linked to this rant. I've been feeling very isolated, and I never realized how many people agreed with me. I've definitely been hanging around the wrong parts of fandom.

Let's see, warnings. Uh. I am very bad at self-censoring, so strange things come out, along with a fair amount of bad language. And at that point, I was kind of mad about some people's reactions, so I might come off a little mean. But that happens.

I must admit, I am no big fan of the Uchihas. I've never been a big fan of the "sullen avenger" archetype to begin with, so Sasuke was mostly boring to me from the getgo and Itachi, well. Itachi was just THERE. He had, in my mind, none of the impact Kisame, a big freaking SHARKMAN HELL YEAH had, so when all this started I was one of those who rolled my eyes and wished for a world where Itachi just really did it for the lols and the power, because that would mean that we could finally END all this Uchiha-BS and the manga could move on to other characters already!

But, I must concede the points in your rant. Tobi spinning all this exposition and having it turn out to be all lies is narrative stupidity of the finest degree, and while my confidence for Kishimoto as a storyteller is low, I don't think even he would let it go on this long.

Except, you must agree that Tobi going "Psyche!" at one point, and revealing that he's been bullshitting about everything from the start because the Sharingan has an undocumented sideeffect of driving it's most powerful users BATSHIT BONKERS, would be awesome in a "oh god what a trainwreck" way.

To summarize, I agree that every point you say is valid, and that Kishimoto's steps are necessary and narrativel sound, it's just that all the effort is lost on me because I wasn't interested in the Uchihas to BEGIN with. All the clever analysis in the world won't sway my opinion, and the increasing importance placed on that clan makes me worry that they won't go away and leave room for other characters anytime soon.

Heck, we may be stuck with their ghost hovering over all the plotpoints from here on out until the end of the manga, since in my mind the next obvious step is that Sasuke will break and go up against the village, thereby bringing about the much vaunted Naruto vs Sasuke round 2 fight. Someone who is a fan of the Uchihas will probably enjoy this development, but in my mind it just makes it all the more clear that Naruto is not the series for me. Which is a pity, because what I fell in love with was the world and the diverse cast. Narrowing down the focus as has been done here, just doesn't do anything for me.

I wouldn't try to make anyone like it. That's pretty pointless--it wouldn't really be much more productive than if someone were to try to convince me to like a Hawaiian pizza. Sometimes, things just come down to "that isn't my taste." Which is fair.

I can also admit that I lucked out in the area of who bores me/who interests me. Since I pretty much love Naruto OR Sasuke action, I'm generally covered.
