The Fall https://youtu.be/QhARR-zmTCE Fantastic use of music!
The Lion King https://youtu.be/GibiNy4d4gc Is there a more epic Disney opening?
Schindler's List https://youtu.be/24fwJMLsyNs The draining of the color as the match goes out is great.

All of those are amazing! I also really love Schindler's List opening scene.

Fellowship of the Ring still has the best movie opening, IMHO. A New Hope is a very close second.

Pan's Labyrinth: https://youtu.be/KkGn7UdSVmU

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (still sends chills down my spine): https://youtu.be/BhjDnrw34QA

Beauty and the Beast (Disney animated version): https://youtu.be/7fEbW568CZo

Boyhood (the first time it was kind of nice and didn't really blow me away even though I think Coldplay's "Yellow" is just an OK song; buuuuut rewatching the movie- which I've only done once after a long time -it really makes me emotional knowing that the film really is the journey of a boy and the way his family is molded in his life through the years): https://youtu.be/fN-pQ1nIxcc

The Virgin Suicides: https://youtu.be/35S6Il-RCl4

The Day After Tomorrow's opening, flying in over an iceshelf looked great.

Though others have said FotR, I would personally say the opening of LotR: The Two Towers with the scene of Gandalf's fight with the balrog was a pretty damn good opening. Very much a second movie opening that is based on events in the first movie, but still, epic opening.

Let's see.

I appreciate really clever title and credits sequences that lead into movies (Pixar is pretty good at this), but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Because, oh my god, how could it not be?
Goonies - Very exciting with a little snapshot of each of the Goonies.
Halloween (1978) - Weird and creepy and sets up the movie.
Speed - Right into the action.
Four Weddings and a Funeral - A lot of swearing that doesn't seem forced or crass, just funny and a good introduction to the characters.
Up - Sweet and heartbreaking.
