Taking care of sick people (vent I guess)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-26 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
So my gf has the flu (probably), and I am taking care of her. And... I don't like it. I don't like taking care of sick people. I lived alone for a while and was used to taking care of myself while sick, and even when I was a teen living at home I did that cause my mom worked a lot. So the whole "taking care of someone" idea is a little weird to me, but I'm doing it, and I am not complaining to my gf or anything like that (I feel like I have a fine bedside manner) but... I really don't like it. Its tiring and frustrating. But at the same time I feel super guilty for feeling that way. I am unemployed atm (hopefully that will be ending soon, I have some interviews lined up and I fill out job applications every day) so its not like I have anything better to do, but I just... don't like this. I find myself getting annoyed, and i would never express that to my gf but... yeah I feel bad about it.

I realize this probably makes me sound like a bad person. Its just been two days and I'm exhausted. Anyway.

How do you guys feel about taking care of sick people F!S? Good at it, bad at it?

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by 'taking care'. If the sick person is whiny and annoying, asking every five seconds for 'another pillow, another drink, a *different* drink, a piece of toast, no, can't do toast, is there crackers, out of tissues, out of water, can you turn up the heat? oh, it's so hot, can you turn down the heat?' and on and on and on, then - fuck that. I don't like it, and get pretty tired of it.

If they're feeling like crap, and ask me to get them something from the store, or ice water, but after a nap or something they shuffle in to get their own refill or next dose of pills, i'm much more likely to help them. People taking advantage piss me off.

(I hate being bothered when i'm sick, usually just curl up in bed and tell everyone to go away, so 'needing to be taken care of' when sick is weird to me.)

My gf is closer to the first example - not quite but like... she isn't really whiny but if I don't do it for her she won't get anything done. Not making food, not taking her medicine, not even turning the light out herself if she wants to nap. And I don't want to be like "hey you could do some of this yourself you know" cause she is legitimately quite sick this just... isn't how I was raised and feels super foreign to me.

Bleh, that's just...there's being really, really sick and not actually being able to do stuff, and then there's just being a jerk. Not taking her medicine? What's the point of that?

That's just silly.

I get your frustration - not how stuff went in my family, either, so i would be at the point of wanting to smack somebody after one day of this, much less several.

Just gonna point out that sometimes you really are that weak that getting the medicine out is impossible. Especially with how wild the flu can be. It's not so much taking it that's the problem as it is packaging still requires some strength or fine motor skills.

Oh, i can barely get some medication out when i'm perfectly healthy (i resort to a knife and scissors), so i get that, but that didn't seem like what OP was saying.

If it's something the sick person can't help, like a cold or they tripped over the dog and have a goose egg and a headache, I don't mind helping, if there's anything I can do to help. Caring for addicts suffering from their addictions is fucking thankless and exhausting because they always fuck up again. But I hate seeing people hurting, so I try and help anyway.
