I agree with pretty much everything. This story has been going on and on without any particular goal even during the previous book, and I'm fed up with the "lets shit on Optimus some more" scenes.

Maybe Barber is trying to move Optimus to the grey area now that Megatron has been getting a redemption arc, but as far as I'm considered, it's just turning Optimus into something that I no longer give a crap about. And yeah, half the time I can't remember who's narrating and it doesn't even matter.

The comics version of Optimus has always been a bit greyer than the Cartoon version. He is a mirror of Megatron, and as Megatron tries to atone from a point of being ordinary again so Optimus has to deal with all stuff that comes with being right at the pinnacle of Cybertronian society. He's one step shy of a God right now. He's having to deal with the temptations of power, and the ever so seductive shortcuts that a person can take because they know they are right. Where Megatron fell, Optimus rises.

OP here. I SEE those elements within the story, and that's why I'm interested and keep reading, in spite of how I feel. I love the story of Optimus being alienated by the Godhood being projected upon him. However... I don't feel like Barber is really taking advantage of what a great concept this is, and I think this is something he does A LOT... Even when he was writing RID/ex-RID, he would appear to propose interesting concepts with characters or plot points, and then just let them die off or fade away without any kind of satisfying resolution. It's sooo frustrating.

I have given up on everything written by Barber or Roberts. I don't touch anything with their names on the cover for any reason. It's great. And IDW Optimus in particular sets my teeth on edge for hard-to-articulate reasons, and has for a while, so I was avoiding this series like the plague.

TBH I love Roberts. I can understand MTMTE/LL not being someone's cup of tea, but personally everything he writes is super up my alley. Barber just eternally frustrates me.

This. I really couldn't get through a lot of Barber's stuff.

For me, Barber's style was kind of a general low-level annoyance until about Combiner Wars, which was when I decided I was done with his stuff. Roberts, on the other hand, I actually really liked until suddenly a switch flipped and I couldn't stand anything he produced. Still not entirely sure why.

If you can pinpoint what bothers you about it, I'd genuinely be interested to hear your thoughts. I admit, his material can reach Whimsical Doctor Who levels, which can irk me, but not enough to be sincerely bothered. I guess I just love his general competence at writing a story and that he can actually tie arcs together...unlike...Barber...
