amen!

I tend to be more bothered at character bashing than caring who it is they're bashing. It just annoys me on every level.

Same. IMO it speaks more about the person who's writing than it does about the character they're bashing. There's interpretation and then there's just plain crapping all over a character.

Same.

...I feel like you're the one who made this secret.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because out of all the people in this community, only one person could possibly dislike character bashing. Everyone else loves it!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-26 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It is weird how prevalent it is in Harry Potter fandom. It's like Harry Potter is a zero-sum game, where to make space for one character to be better, you have to make another one worse.

Anyway, it doesn't bother me much unless it's a character I like, so.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-26 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

Fandom has been happier for me since I started consistently remembering to add "-bashing" to my searches.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
People actually tag their bashing for what it is?
sarillia: (Default)

[personal profile] sarillia 2017-03-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
They do it in Harry Potter fandom at least. I'm sure it acts like an advertisement for some people.

I wish they would in my fandom so that I don't have to find out that a character I may or may not like is a rapist or abuser in a story with nary a clue in the summary or tags.

I've seen it done. I assumed it was to avert any comments about characters being OOC or poorly written plots.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
There is a tag for that? Amazing I haven't ran across that yet. I guess my fandoms aren't as big as I thought. I hope to never come across that.

Same here, I don't get the point of it and it mostly just seems like waste of time. Plus if I don't like a character I don't want to read about them in general, even in a negative light.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but I think it must be more of a young teenager thing. I remember finding them cathartic but it wasn't until I grew up I realized how petty and pathetic it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-26 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I love bashing fic for characers I dislike or even neutral to. Usually they're quite interesting and are not afraid to tweak canon. However I hate it when writers don't tag bashing/put in in AN.

I dislike certain characters but I try to live and let live-- after all if you feel something for a character, be it hatred or love-- well it's better then ambivalence -- but once again, everyone has their different take on a character.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Define character bashing.

Because twisting a character into an unrecognizably nasty caricature of themself in order to prop up the author's ship/make their fave look better is shitty writing, but I've seen a lot of accusations of character bashing directed at any fics that have portrayed a character in anything less than a perfectly flattering light. It's possible to focus on a character's flaws without being bashing fic.

Yeah, this was my thought. I read a hell of a lot of fic across multiple fandoms and media types, and "bashing" is ime pretty damn uncommon.

Writing Tony Stark being an asshole to his friends, Hermione being a pushy know-it-all, or Garrus being a hypocritical revenge-driven jerk... that's not bashing, that's just who those characters are. People have negative traits and sometimes narratives are going to highlight them.

Ha, this happened to me once in an FMA fic. I had characterized Al as not completely sweet and innocent, and a lot of people were really pissed at the interpretation.
Which okay, it's legitimate that some people thought I was mischaracterizing him, but some people claimed I was bashing, which was really not the intention (and I like Al!)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
If it's bashing a character that I don't particularly like, it doesn't bother me.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's all fun and games until it's your favorite character.

It really depends on how you define bashing.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Because I really like it when a writer focuses on the bad behavior of a "hero" character, calls it out as bad behavior, and gives it actual consequences, especially if the canon doesn't acknowledge the bad behavior of the character and just treats it like it's fine or funny or quirky. And as long as the character isn't twisted into someone completely evil with no redeeming qualities, I wouldn't call that character bashing, but some people do.

And there are stories where a hero turns out to be a villain and it's just an interesting scenario for the writer to explore, while other stories like this are absolutely bashing that character and the difference is tone and intent.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's the same but I cannot stand fic that bash a character simply because you don't like them. Even for villains it just feels incredibly immature.
