The saddest part is that he was at least as good in the role as Hayden Christensen. Hayden just got extra credit for being shippable.

Yah. In the right lighting, Planky McWooden's dead, soulless eyes almost looked slightly alive when he was around Ewan McGregor. You've got to really stretch to call that acting, though.

Oh god, this made me laugh so hard. He was just so terrible in those movies that it was a legitimate surprise for me when I saw him in something else later and it turned out he could actually act.

Maybe it had something to do with Lucas' script and shitty direction for Hayden's acting then?

Pretty much. I mean, yeah, an amazing or very experienced actor can rise above dreck, but Hayden didn't have the chops for it at 19.
