Revitalized old fandoms (Death Note)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was hugely involved in the fandom back in the day, and Death Note has always had a special place in my heart. Now since that trailer came out, I started poking my head in fandom discussions and things. So many people are just watching it now, since Netflix is promoting the anime so much to prepare for the movie, and it is ridiculously nostalgic. People arguing about the same things they did ten years ago. It's that amazing rare opportunity where I could literally join an old, beloved fandom and it'd be just where I left it.

Anyone had a similar experience? And in particular, any other DN fans feeling all the nostalgia?

None yet. I wish DBZ would get a huge second fandom rising but it has not quite happened. :(

This SORT OF happened for Final Fantasy VII, but the opposite for me. I really hated the spin-offs, and only wanted to talk about the original game canon. Basically, it killed off the "original" fandom. I think it'll be different with Death Note, because while you'll obviously get fans who have only seen the movie, but at least it won't butt heads with the original anime at all.

I've noticed that a lot of the "original" FF7 fandom seems to have made a bit of a comeback.

Partially it's people getting back into it bc of the remake announcement. But, I think it's also just that the Compilation fandom is fading away (what with the lack of decent material to work with and good writing/characters to sustain it) while the OG fandom has just kept chugging along.

But I guess by original fandom I mean, zero acknowledgement of anything that happened in the spin-offs (or spin-off era Word of God), which is what is hard to find. I want a fandom that ignores their entire existence, especially in regards to retconned plot, characterizations, and basically anything that wasn't explained in the original game is considered open-ended. I'm not sure the remake will give me that because I'm sure the remake itself is going to be pretty different in order to accommodate the spin-offs.
