Weird feelings about Russian pal

(Anonymous) 2017-03-29 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I feel bad because a friendly acquaintance of mine lives in Russia and it's been hard for me to see them the same way since the election influencing scandals hit here (USA).

Intellectually I know they have nothing to do with it and that we actually share many views, but I feel weird about even talking to them lately, raw and suspicious.

I've never had anything against Russian people before. It's a weird feeling, and I generally really like this person. 😥.

I hope it passes, and that they can't tell how I feel.

I won't lie, that's pretty weird. The average citizen has zero to do with their government. I'm not sure you'd be too happy if someone started disliking/being suspicious of you because of our current president.

Everyone in all countries is a stupid nationalist. There's no reason to let the mutual differences of governments play into it.

By this logic, all your international friends should be feeling iffy about you right about now. I mean, how can a person living in a country that elected Trump be trusted?

I wouldn't be surprised tbh. I've been pretty vocal against, but a lot of people can't look at this country the same way rn.

I think it sounds like you need to step back from the news/politics cycle a little bit. Especally since no matter if they influenced the election or not (which continues to be really iffy even after months of govt and private investigation), I would hope you'd want to maintain a positive relationship with Russia rather than falling into rekindling Cold War red menace-style suspicions.

If it's making you feel suspicious towards a friend who has literally nothing to do with this, that's a bad sign.

I'm not sure if suspicious is the right term. But negative, weirdly raw, and distant. It's very odd.

That is how many people have felt about American citizens for the last fifteen or so years. Maybe longer.
