Re: Why don't people see that it's always personal because that's how humans work

this comment assumes that a gay person, a black person, and a woman -only- care specifically about their own issues. usually a person who chastises someone for only "coming around" when they know someone affected by an issue is going to be someone who doesn't only champion their own cause. tbh, and it's kind of offensive that you're framing it in a way that makes it seem everyone is, at their core, the same type of asshole. black people can empathize with the struggles of gay people, feminists can empathize with the struggles of Native Americans, and etc. and they don't have to have family members or friends in those groups to do it. the only thing that's required is basic human empathy.

so yes, it's pretty fucking pathetic when people like rightwing politicians suddenly change their minds on gay issues when their child comes out, because it means they'd spent their life discounting the humanity of thousands of other gay people, and only give a shit now that it's in their own backyard. it speaks to a severe lack of character and ability to empathize with others. so far as I know, I don't have any close Muslim friends, but I can empathize and speak out against Islamophobia. I don't have any family members addicted to drugs, but I can have sympathy for their plight too. when you have to have your feet held to the fire to find empathy for another human being, I have the right to think that's a massive failure on your part.
