Hm.

I definitely agree that super-weak strawmen are a bad thing, but I'm also not sure I can think of any examples of that specific dynamic.

Can you give us some examples of such characters? I didn't realize this was a common trope in recent fantasy.

That would drive me nuts too! I've seen it in fanfic, not so much fantasy novels...
more broadly, it's just annoying when supposedly adult characters are essentially born yesterday for plot reasons.

I'm thinking of Western fantasy/historically inspired work, and I can see a few "monks" (Christian-inspired) that might fit the innocent-ascetic-until-he-tries-boobs-and-booze criticism. Though your use of an Eastern picture threw me off, because I feel like Eastern-inspired ascetics in Western fantasy are always treated as way more mystical and ~enlightened~.

... and yet, Augustine of Hippo.

What do you mean, and yet? Augustine wasn't a monk when he came up with the 'Lord, make me chaste, but not yet,' prayer. That whole passage is a slightly caustic reflection on his behaviour as a confused and horny young man, who wasn't sure exactly what he believed anyway. Augustine was very well aware of the pleasures of the world and the flesh before he adopted an ascetic lifestyle as a mature man. He doesn't fit the trope OP is complaining about in pretty much any way.

I've seen a bunch of things like that, only set in the present day. A bunch of years back there was a rash of TV shows whose plot was "religious person is forced into encounter with non-religious environment CUE SPIRITUAL CRISIS LOOK THEY DON'T WANT TO BE RELIGIOUS ANYMORE THEY SAW THE LIGHTTTTT"
It was pretty gross.
