Re: spoilers for ffxv
(I'm really a bit scared about episode Ignis because of that very reason. On the other hand - and this goes for Luna as well to a certain extent- he was equally groomed for his role even if he knew about it, so... hm. Still, it would suck if he actually knew what was going to happen all along.)
Re: spoilers for ffxv
(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 07:42 am (UTC)(link)(I do think he knows. :/ And my personal theory thus far is that he's actually, at least up until Altissia and Leviathan, working with the Empire-- they'd probably have promised Noct would live, so long as their other demands [the Crystal, Lucian territory, etc.] were met. That part where you split into two groups [Ignis and Noct, Gladio and Prompto] to infiltrate the Empire base, and he sends you on ahead without confirming the guy you downed is actually subdued, only for Ignis to show up later all WHOOPS HE GOT AWAY... idk. It's suspicious. But we shall see, I suppose!)
Re: spoilers for ffxv
And it's the best example of "show don't tell" done completely wrong, it's amazing. I thought it was fun to play but damn, the plot was bad. It was also basically all the worst parts of FFX and FFXII mashed together.
The Luna/Noct thing, I could totally see it as "childhood friends who agreed to get married because politics" if you actually have to go the marriage route. But the way it was done... yikes. Also, I may have misinterpreted it/it was a weird translation, but in Kingsglaive, it seemed like the whole marriage thing was actually something Ardyn proposed? That makes it even worse, why is everyone so okay with that?
Well, at least the post-credit scene made for some hilarious moments for people who chose a picture of the cup noodles or Cindy's cleavage.
(I think this sounds like it could make sense but I hope you're wrong. They didn't really make a lot of plot decisions that actually made sense in that game anyway.)

Oh yeah no it was absolutely his doing. Like, I genuinely hope they were serious when they teased new endings in upcoming DLC, because the current one is Ultimate Bad End, for real. Ardyn got everything he wanted, the end. But I do at least think it's intended to be that way-- Noct's sacrifice doesn't feel heroic. It feels brutal and sad and unfair, especially considering the utter ambiguity on whether it was even worth it in the end (did everyone die in a massive purge of Light? is ten years of darkness too much to bring ecosystems and the incredibly diminished population of humanity back from?). I keep joking with my wife: they should patch in an option at the end of chapter 13 to get the fuck out of Gralea and come up with a better plan than "do everything Ardyn says," haha.
(I kind of hope I'm wrong too, but I do really feel like his DLC is either going to make me love him or hate him. I just have this bad feeling that he knows so much more than he lets on.)
Re: spoilers for ffxv
It had some high points, definitely. It totally wasn't all bad. But it was a mess.
Yes, the way it ended was the ultimate downer ending - and I couldn't stand Ardyn so I'm pretty bitter about it (I'm really not fond of the "everything goes according to my plan" characters who are always one or 10 steps ahead of everyone). I'm also not a fan of "you can't ever change fate" plots, but that's a matter of personal taste, I guess. Say what you want about FFX, but they actually pulled the whole "fuck fate, we'll find another way" thing off quite nicely.
Heh, my friend whom I played the game with is a biologist and she raged so much about there still being green grass in the scene where the light returns and how stuff survived so long without sunlight. I mean, sure, magic and all, but still. What did people eat (except for cup noodles)?
I'm actually not entirely sure where Ignis' DLC will tie in. Gladio was away for quite a while, as was Prompto, but Ignis was around most of the time (except for that scene you mentioned and that was a bit too short to fill a DLC) - maybe it'll be short scenes in-between or a prequel type of thing? Hm.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)I enjoy Ardyn as a villain, in the end (his backstory-- though, again, gathered from supplementary materials-- makes him interesting to me), but I admit that I was shocked that it didn't take the "fuck fate, we'll find another way" route. I really did think it was going to build up to that, considering how hard the story hammered that all of Noctis' choices were made for him, and that he was essentially just a pawn being moved around at the will of those more powerful than him. I really thought there was going to be a strike back against it.
THE GRASS BOTHERED ME TOO, HAHA. I was like... that's not how photosynthesis works! It's probably safe to assume that even after all of the Empire turned into daemons (effectively halving the world's population), and then factoring in all the people that would have died trying to get to safe havens (Lestallum, Altissia), there still would have been widespread famine and a lot more death. I mean, even if you assume the flora made it through okay, the fauna sure as hell didn't; the world's completely overrun by daemons. It's reasonable to assume that even after clearing the darkness, it was too late. Which makes Noct's sacrifice all the more pointless and heartbreaking.
That's my main question too, where they'll place Ignis' DLC in general. All we know about it so far is that the writers have said it'll have the most impact on the main story. I do think you could get away with short in-betweens-- like the base, and when you get separated in Altissia, and you could even fudge out a few "sneaks away from camp at night" scenes-- but it'll be interesting to see what they do. I'd love a prequel, honestly. (This is clearly in no way influenced by the fact that I adore the hilariously built-in high school AU this universe has, lmao.
High school Prompto's such a cutie!)
Re: spoilers for ffxv
Ardyn's backstory is pretty interesting. I think quite honestly that his design is a bit of a no for me (it's shallow, I know, but he looks so hilariously overdesigned to me) and the way everything always went his way was a bit boring in my eyes.
Some other thing I keep wondering about: Is the in-game world really that small that it's just basically one bigger city state and two countries? Even with the Empire as huge as it is, it seems so tiny...
I think the small in-between scenes could be interesting but at the same time massively disointed. Then again, I just played through Episode Gladiolus and... it's really short, so if the other DLCs are equally short, there really might just be a few short scenes covered after all...
I'd love to see a prequel but I think it's unlikely because they'd have to do a new kind of environment for that instead of just some recycled dungeon pieces and I'm not expecting they'd do that.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)lmao, no, I totally agree on Ardyn's design. It's like he fell into a drag queen's dumpster, rolled out of that one directly into a local community theatre's, and then just rolled with whatever stuck to him. AND THEN HE PUT A FEDORA ON TOP OF IT. (It definitely is frustrating that everything goes his way, though.)
I do think that's the case, yeah. This last update they pushed with Episode Gladio expanded the visible map, at least, so it gives you a bit more of the idea of the scale, but at the same time I was just giggling the other day about how if you're anywhere in Lucis and your quest marker is anywhere in Altissia, it's only like 8-9 miles away. Wow, brand-new far-off country EIGHT MILES AWAY, huh? You could walk there in just a few hours if it weren't for the ocean. Idk if they truly intended it to be such a tiny world (which would be interesting and make the day/night cycle being so brief make more sense than just 'video game time') or if it was just difficult to scale properly with a broad open-world map to explore in one part of the world, and very linear paths to follow in others.
Yeah, Episode Gladio's short for sure, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that his really was intended to be the shortest one, way more gameplay/score focused than story, so that kind of makes sense. I expect the others to be longer, since they've been said to be way more story-focused. (Episode Prompto especially; they've got a lot of ground to cover with him.)
You're probably right, though it'd certainly be cool. I suppose technically they'd still have the Insomnia set pieces to work with as holdovers from Vs.XIII, though? So you could probably rework those given enough time, and that'd be the best place for any prequel work.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
That's a perfect description of what Ardyn looks like, I'm crying!
Heh, 8-9 miles is even swimmable if you really had to.
I think they also had the plot conflicting with a bigger world, even if they'd wanted to have one. It's not very believable that one Empire has the majority of a huge world with dozens or even hundreds of countries under their control... But it would make the day/night cycle logical, and even though I believe that's not actually intentional, it's kinda nice. (I was pretty amused in-game about wondering with my friend about "wait, does it get dark at 3 pm already?" and characters mentioning it... several chapters later as if they only just noticed.)
I'm kinda expecting a bit of a brainfuck chapter with Prompto, considering I guess they'll cover his time spent in Ardyn's clutches. His head got messed with quite a bit during that time, I expect.
I could see them using a few older, now updated Insomnia pieces for the simple reason that a LOT in this game looks like it was designed with "we can reuse this in the FFVII remake" in mind.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)I'm sort of willing to suspend disbelief about the world size, I think, just because I've run across the idea of one country/empire/what have you holding the majority of the land even in worlds of our size-- the city-states of Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia from 1984 come to mind, for instance. So I could believe Eos is either really tiny (which really does seem to be the case, to be fair), or more or less Earth-sized with a lot of actual space cropped out for ease of motion/gameplay. It's an interesting discussion topic for sure! I do agree with you that the day/night cycle vs. world size probably isn't intentional at all, though, haha.
Oooh, yes, his chapter's gonna be rough. I'm almost certain it'll start on the train (where Ardyn is using illusions to make Noct attack Prompto), and go straight through to his being tortured by Ardyn. There's a lot of room in-between for brain-fuckery. (Especially considering that Chapter 13 Verse 2 confirmed that Ardyn can and will take Noctis' form to mess with people... you know he's going to do that to Prompto.) Not to mention the whole mess with the MTs. Ugggh, poor thing.
Oh, huh, I hadn't even considered them re-using set pieces for the VII remake. Insomnia does have a sort of Midgar-but-shinier feel to it, doesn't it? I knew they were going to essentially use the exact same battle system (with a little tweaking to allow for Materia), but I didn't think about other elements. I kind of wonder if the episodic content of XV is sort of a test run to see how well fans take to the concept before they do the same with VII?
Re: spoilers for ffxv
Yeah I mean most Final Fantasy games have fairly small scale worlds, even those with entire world maps to travel so...
I'm mostly wondering how that trailer/small preview scene in the snow will tie into the Prompto DLC - if that's an actual thing he does or if it's all some illusion that's just all in his head. Hm.
Midgar is pretty shiny on top of the city as well so they can use quite a bit of Insomnia material for that and some of bombed-out Insomnia for the slums beneath. Quite a few monsters are there as well, completely or in part (the Midgar Zolom, some of the weapons, a lot of the machinery...) and the carnival looked a lot like a test run for the Gold Saucer haha!
I guess they might use it as a test run, definitely. Altough I don't think there will be any changes to the episodic release (which I find a bit of a pity but ah, well. FFVII isn't the one Final Fantasy I most wanted a remake for anyway ;_;).
