I prefer the UK versions myself but the US versions have that lovely art by Mary Grandpre. :\

Those covers are iconic. I've read several international versions but I can't help feeling a bit weird not seeing the same illustrations.

Mary Grandpre's art IS Harry Potter-land. I can't separate it from the HP-verse in my mental imagery and frankly I don't want to, it's just so perfect imo.

I prefer the UK versions. I don't have a complete set of any. I have a few UK ones and a few US ones. Someday, I want to have a complete set of the UK adult ones, because that's my favorite artwork. The more minimalist is more my style.

I think there's 4 or 5 UK covers right now, possibly more. I have 4 different UK covers of the first book. Which ones do you like best? There were also the movie tie-in ones and Bloomsbury signature.

I just love the difference in all the international editions and some editions use the UK covers and others use the US cover instead.

The one I like is the one I got when Deathly Hallows came out because I was in London at the Time. It has Slytherin's locket on the front cover. No characters or anything else, just the locket.

Oh okay, I know that style. That one seems harder to find used.

I collect the books. Which is problematic now because they keep releasing new ones.

Obviously I need the illustrated editions because they're gorgeous.

And then UK/Canada are releasing the first book in each of the House color theme for the 20th anniversary.

Wow, I had no idea the changes were to that extent; I just assumed it was spelling and cultural references etc.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very curious what kind of cultural differences you were expecting? I wondered this the other day when people were being jerks about how much culture was lost, but the sort of things mentioned didn't really seem to have a lot to do with the culture of the UK, just names for stuff that have American counterparts.

I guess when I think of culture, I think of grander processes: How and why we do the things we do and believe what we believe, bot what we call our clothes.

I didn't really mean cultural differences to be honest but things like the ones mentioned in the last post, like jumpers. (And not knowing the word Philosopher, apparently.) Which is just vocabulary so I was being redundant. There really aren't that many specific cultural references in HP, which is smart as they won't date. It's hard to tell they're set in the 90s.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not an HP fan, but I just assumed changes were word substitutions, not re-arranging sentences.

I haven't read the UK versions. Did Rowling re-write the books so extensively for the US versions that it would be a really significant difference?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who did the rewriting, but, I mean, just look at the secret. It's just one example of pretty extensive rephrasing with UK on the left and US on the right.

The books have UK editors and US editors and as we can see sometimes you get different results.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Having read both versions, the only one you really need to read the UK version is PoA, where the US version changed three of the chapters so much the story made no sense.

I should get a newe version of the US edition and see if they've fixed that.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea they were different!

Revision is to go over your school notes... Kids don't study, they revise :) Well, they can do. It's just one of those things. You're right, it doesn't exactly make dictionary sense. It's not like they're changing anything...
