That said, if you have already convinced yourself that it's going to hurt, then frankly you're going to psych yourself into being in more pain than you would have otherwise.
It's generally recommended that first timers don't get it in an area that's highly innervated and don't go for an area that's close to bone. Most of the more common areas to get tattoos (upper arm, lower back, outer butt cheek, shoulder/upper back) are common because they are the least likely to be extremely painful. Also, keep in mind that the longer the tattooing session the more intense the pain will become, so you should limit yourself to something you feel confident that you can withstand.

This isn't something you should go into scared. Maybe it would be a good idea to go into wherever you plan on getting it done and have a look around the place. Possibly even ask if someone else getting a tattoo wouldn't mind you watching the procedure so you can get a sense of what it will be like?
Perhaps that would put you a little more at ease.
