I have one on the inside of my arm, a hand width above my wrist. It didn't hurt at all, just felt like someone was scratching my skin lightly with their fingernails. It's two kanji in solid black, so it took a lot longer than I expected, more than two hours.

Were the kanji big? Would coloring take more time or less?

10 cm for both of them together, but very intricate ones. I guess colouring would have taken about the same time? Line art with a bit of shadowing would have been a lot faster.

That seems like a long time for two kanji. Were they really big?

10 cm both of them together, but very intricate. And solid black. Line art with a bit of shadowing would have been much much faster.

Well, every artist is different. I know my SO has been tattooing for so long, he's gotten really fast at pretty much everything. He won't do Celtic knotwork anymore, though - he hates it.
