This makes me realise one of my RP characters is totally a voluntary shapeshifter. She only shifts between different humanoid forms (think metamorphagus) plus her original form (which is a small glowy stone), but she shifts, voluntarily, and it doesn't hurt her.

This also makes me think back through some of the characters I have made up in the past, and shapeshifting is something that has popped up on occasion. It's not always voluntary, but I attribute that to the original inspiration for it - "The Last Unicorn" did not have voluntary shapeshifting, though it also wasn't a werewolf-like situation.
