I never thought to compare Lovecraftian horror with silverfish, but … I think it works in a strange way that somehow relates straight back to Lovecraft. (Yes, this makes sense in my mind, lol.)

Unpopular sidebar: I think silverfish are actually quite cute. Plus they do no harm at all.

I was indifferent-to-sort-of-liking this ship before the fans turned me off it completely. But I agree that I also couldn't really buy the dynamic I would find. It was too fluffy for the most part. I'm not against Valinor fics, but I do feel that Maedhros has some serious consequences to face and it just feels too easy to give him happily-ever-after without dealing with the fallout of being a Kinslayer or being suicidal. Even a mention.

I'm not interested in them when they were young in Valinor, and the fics set in Middle-earth also feel off. I think, mostly, people just write them as ATG or OOC. It's hard to find anything good with them.

Curufin was sketchy as hell, so my personal canon is that whatever good there was in Celebrimbor he must have taken from his mom.

(Also, it's been a while since I read the books, but I sort of got the impression that Celegorm was the evil mastermind and Curufin the minion; so I'd say Celegorm is more of an asshole.)

Because it was clear in the 1970s that there was an enormous market for that kind of stuff, and Lester Del Rey realized it was much easier and cheaper to satisfy that market by shipping out crap that looked vaguely like Tolkien than by getting actual original work following up on Tolkien, and epic-fantasy as a genre and as a community has basically self-defined around that in the last ~40 years. And bad money drives out the good, as you might say.

In other words, capitalism and the unquenchable thirst for action adventure pulp.
