That's kinda depressing. :(

I've just stopped reading straight romances in general because there's just too many "ugh oh god why" troupes no matter where I turn.

curious if OP means specifically for Japanese fiction. I don't have an issue avoiding these.

Japanese fiction is more likely to go farther with it, if that makes any sense. I've seen plenty of no-means-yes before sex in American fiction, but usually it turns into an open yes before the sex starts.

Even so, OP clearly hasn't been looking hard enough. I read almost nothing but Japanese manga and doujinshi aside from a few western fandoms I still read fic for, and anything remotely smelling of rape/dubcon turns me off. Yet I've not run out of works to enjoy.

Just avoid the super popular stuff and step outside your usual reading zone, there's plenty of gems that aren't popular in Japan BECAUSE they actually have healthy relationships.

DA. I stumbled into what OP means (well not that context as it sounds horrid) in general as I do like psychological horror and recovery from it and some comics just love the recovery part being 'better than your last abuser :D!'.

Aaaaand my family has lots of age gaps andddddd essentially most of couples I know have a 10 year one (my brother and his husband are least - 2 years - me and my partner are ... 20 years but my mum and her's are 15). What is more (ha ha!) my own boyfriend is an ex teacher (oh, manga loves those teen / professor tropes!) but never my own xD or even in same area.

Yet, just yesterday seen a comic that was all 'evil 15 year olds seducing 38 year old (yep, EXACT) teachers'. That also was not about me (if I tried that - I'd hope for a teacher to ... stop me? Set me okay? Refer me to trusted people or specialists?).
