Unless a book is self-published, you should at least be able to trust that the editor knew what they were doing. This probably depends on genre, though. God knows I've read some tragic examples of the chick lit genre and I'm sure pulpy fantasy and sci-fi is little better.

I could believe this but I also think that they likely grew past the conflict fairly quickly. One thing I really love (and is terribly underserved in fanfic) is their relationship in Middle-earth. Fingon doesn't found his own kingdom like his brother and cousins but stays with his dad, which I think is really sweet. I'd love more fic about them during that time period.

I think because she's half-elven and he's got Dunedain blood, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Arwen and Aragorn could be about the same height. But I agree about Luthien and Beren. I mean, her dad is the tallest Elf ever and Beren doesn't have any special height-genes. I picture that she towers over him.

I had a similar experience recently regarding wire hangers and realised that I always envision Faye Dunaway whenever I think of Joan Crawford. I doubt I could even pick out Joan Crawford from a lineup at this point.
