I got zero problem with Whedon's female characters, and think the outrage is pretty overblown. Zoe from Firefly is one of my all time favorite characters.

I wouldn't say I'm outraged about his female characters, I just think there have to be other directors with more interesting takes out there that we haven't already seen many times. Ideally, even, female ones. It's not that Joss is intrinsically bad, it's that it's Joss again.

Congratulations.

But she calls Mal, a white man, SIR?!!!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!! /sarcasm

(Anonymous) 2017-04-12 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you view OP saying they're "underwhelmed" by Whedon's female characters as "outrage"?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Firefly fans. Anything less than uncritical support is indignant angry outrage.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
sup, Firefly!hater anon

(Anonymous) 2017-04-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but the antifans are about ten times more obnoxious. Anyone mention Whedon or Firefly, and these massive, veiny hate!boners pop up all over the place. seriously nuts.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-13 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
This comment and the one above it pretty much proves what ayrt said about Firefly fans and their tendency to overreact.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
okay, same anon

You appear to lack objectivity where Firefly fans are concerned. Even I think so, and I think Firefly is overrated.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-13 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, pretty much. Even expressions of mild dislike (OP had the gall to be underwhelmed? OMG so much hate!) tends to set them off.

I got zero problem with Whedon's female characters, and think the outrage is pretty overblown.

None of his shows are in my top favorites, but he's written an uncommonly large number of solid female characters over the years, and very few crap ones.

I find the hate on some people have for him not just overblown but outright baffling.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-13 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Lets take Buffy

He wrote the magic child who is always the load.
The ditzy action girl who gets broken by life (and who loves being in abusive relationships with older men).
The bi-lesbian girl who gets to do the technobabble and becomes evil until a man saves her from herself.
The oblivious overreacting mom, who dies.
The other "cute" lesbian, who dies.
The broken bird action girl who loves sex and is evil.
The bitch with a heart of gold, who leaves the show early on.

That is a large female cast for the day, I'll agree, but none of those are positive portrayals of women. They might be Strong Female Characters [tm], but they are not good female characters. That is leaving out all the waif fu fanservice and skimpy clothing. And that is his flagship show. We could talk about the one with the whore and the traumatized warrior girl, and for which he was planning on getting the whore raped to death by zombies to motivate the male party leader, but it got canned before it could really get into its stride of awful.

Shhh, pointing out stuff like this is practically a hate crime, didn't you get the memo?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
DA, but holy shit, what a hideously cynical and hopelessly biased view you have of this guy's writing. I wouldn't even know where to start with this comment of yours. It's like you're wearing some kind of reality distorting glasses whenever you watch Whedon's work or something. O_o

I don't even know which characters you think you're describing here half the time, that's how little they resemble the characters Whedon actually wrote.

You forgot Rape: the series, that people INSIST was not "that bad".
