Re: Inspired by #6
Which sounds terrible, but you have to admit isn't an unfair stereotype of certain US states.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)Now if the character is covertly racist and starts using religion to preach hate or justify things to people, that's less of a stretch, but retroactively adding it as an explanation after they've been racist without a hint of religion in canon is a bit different.
Sometimes racists are just racists.

Re: Inspired by #6
(Anonymous) 2017-04-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)It just bothers me when people add actual faith and consideration of religion to characters that never showed any in canon. Especially if it's a very serious canon. You'd think it'd have come up at some point if it were important to them to play any significant part in a fic.
Besides the intentional religion/history setting AUs.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)I feel the same way about this as I do if someone writes the character randomly having a secret separate family with children they love and adore or something. Or five previous divorces. Like the whole time they never thought about or mentioned these things that would have a big impact on their lives and I'm supposed to believe this is believable and realistic for them? OFc, again, the more serious the canon is, the harder it is to believe
Re: Inspired by #6
That might also bother me if I were invested in the canon. I have never actually done it with a detailed canon though, so I can't speak to results. The same way I can't say I've ever written anything with any investment in the fact that the characters I've interpreted as religious were... well, religious.
I've only ever occasionally used religion in fics as a tool to try to focus a constellation of canon character traits that made more sense coming from someone with a particular background in a particular area of the world.
