OP, I'm not trying to belittle your fear response, I just can't understand this. It looks so cartoonish, like the underlying skeletal and muscular structures aren't even thought out.

In real life a thing like this trying to retain human facial proportions wouldn't even have a working jaw... it would either just flop open all the time or it wouldn't be able to open at all. tl;dr it's the least threatening thing of all time to me.

I stopped watching this show near the end of season four (after they completely butchered Juliette's character and made it clear Mary Sue - er, Adalind and Nick would be endgame), but kept up with it via recaps. Out of curiosity, I decided to watch the series finale - I can honestly say I've never been more disappointed and horrified in by a TV show in my life. The acting... It's like the majority of the cast had given up. Only Juliette, Renard, Monroe and Rosalee bore any semblance to the characters I remembered, while others like Nick, Adalind and Trubel were way way WAY over the top, punctuating each line with bulging eyes and gaping mouths (and let's not get into Kelly and Diana, because holy shit they were examples of how kids should NOT be done). If this is what became of the show... I'm glad it got cancelled.

B!S Juliette and Renard are still and will always be my favourite characters, and I will forever loathe Adalind and the blatant favouritism she was shown by the writers/creators.

Not familiar with this example, but this is a common gripe of mine. The ancestor of the trope seems to be stories like "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" or "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", where the implication was that ordinary human beings could as cruel, selfish, or destructive as any monster or murderer. These days, it seems more like a way of sidestepping suspension of disbelief--"We know you don't believe in monsters, so instead of trying to frighten you with monsters, we'll try to frighten you with people who're hallucinating that they're being hunted by monsters."
