Making it so that either or both of his parents survive in a universe would alter some minor personality quirks, but what I consider to be the heart of the character would not change. I also like having my OTP meet under totally different circumstances than the canon one to see how they would react and how their relationship would form. I can play around with what is nature and what is nurture.
True, some readers might not agree with my interpretation of the characters, but I try and base that core off what canon gives me to work with initially.
Of course, all the vast majority of the current popular fics in my fandom are insanely OOC, so apparently that's what my fandom's current readership wants from their AUs. So I'll be happy with my little cult following. :)
