"I think it's also pretty difficult to reproduce the characters when you change the setting very drastically"

Eh? I don't see why, in the hands of a good writer who has a solid grasp of characterization. Characters aren't their settings, after all - not if they're well written in the first place. Think about yourself and the sort of person you are. Are you going to have a totally different personality if you somehow end up on a space ship or running a coffee shop?

This.

In my case, in canon, the lead is an orphan. Making it so that either or both of his parents survive in a universe would alter some minor personality quirks, but what I consider to be the heart of the character would not change. I also like having my OTP meet under totally different circumstances than the canon one to see how they would react and how their relationship would form. I can play around with what is nature and what is nurture.

True, some readers might not agree with my interpretation of the characters, but I try and base that core off what canon gives me to work with initially.

Of course, all the vast majority of the current popular fics in my fandom are insanely OOC, so apparently that's what my fandom's current readership wants from their AUs. So I'll be happy with my little cult following. :)

As someone who's been through a lot of shit in life, I noticed a lot of my characteristics: humor, the way I communicate with people, how open I am, how I cope with my feelings etc, change DRASTICALLY as a consequence of those things. If I lived a sheltered and sweet life I would be a totally different person, yes.

Well sure, but... most AUs aren't about "Character X in a world where they were raised in a happy loving home instead of an abusive, broken one". It's about "Character X if he was a 1920s private eye". You're generally not looking to rewrite the entire character from scratch, because that'd be missing the point.

Not if I was just magically dropped into that alternate existence tomorrow, no. But if I was the sort of person who got myself sent on a mission in space, or had worked my way to owning my own business, that me would definitely be quite different than the person I am.

Furthermore, I think it's generally a lot simpler to take normal(ish) people and say "But what if they were extraordinary?" than it is to take extraordinary people and say, "What if they weren't extraordinary?" So, John and Sherlock have superpowers? Sounds fun! Steve and Bucky are chefs? Not so into it.

(For the record, I actually love most of the AUs in my current fandom.)
