But if I was the sort of person who got myself sent on a mission in space, or had worked my way to owning my own business, that me would definitely be quite different than the person I am.
Furthermore, I think it's generally a lot simpler to take normal(ish) people and say "But what if they were extraordinary?" than it is to take extraordinary people and say, "What if they weren't extraordinary?" So, John and Sherlock have superpowers? Sounds fun! Steve and Bucky are chefs? Not so into it.
(For the record, I actually love most of the AUs in my current fandom.)
