I...can kind of see this?

I might be a shipper in my current fandom, but I'm omnivorous when it comes to fic, so I'll read stories about pairings I don't particular ship or like.

I'm hesitant to give feedback on stories outside of my ship (good or concrit) because I'm afraid the writer might take it the wrong way.

If it's on AO3 I will anonymously hit kudos if I like the story, though. I once did it while signed in and got a really weird reaction from the author as a result because they knew I shipped the opposite pairing and thought I was...idk...making fun of them? Being sarcastic? I'm not really clear what they thought, but they definitely didn't think it was genuine.

this is so wild

what fandom was this in?

Huh. I'm always delighted to find out that someone who doesn't really like my ship enjoyed my fic anyway. It means my writing was good enough to engage someone who doesn't have the built in emotional investment of a shipper, and that gives me no end of warm fuzzies.

+1 Agreed.

And as a reader, I love it when a writer can make me give a pairing I wasn't all that wild about a second look. Even if the pairing doesn't wind up being a top favorite of mine, at the very least, I get a much better idea of why people like it so much, and I got to read a good story in the process as well, so hey, win-win all around, I say :).

Yes, exactly! I'm absolutely not a Draco/ Neville shipper, for instance, but one of my favourite HP pics is for that ship (now thoroughly jossed, as it was written in the long gap post Goblet of Fire, but it's still a fic I returned to occasionally).

TIL some fanfic writers checks their single kudos

I can't be hassled to remember my own nickname half the time, how does people even remember single users?

Usually I'm just grateful for any kudos on my work, I don't really give a fuck if the person leaving it it's not an actual shipper of the pairing in question, that seems a tad obsessive....
