what's an anti-shipper?

(not op)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone who devotes a lot of time and energy on how much they don't like a pairing. Can sometimes include writing screeds about how problematic and terrible both the ship and its shippers are, and tagging them with the pairing so that it shows up in the feeds of people who enjoy the pairing.

May or may not include devotion to a different, "pure and good" pairing.

Of course, there are some shippers who take any criticism of their favorite pairing as a "hate," and the very act of shipping a different pairing as proof that they are horrible people.

I think they said it wrong. Anti just means someone who is openly against a ship and frequently hates on the ship or it's shippers.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Variously:

- someone on the other side of a ship war from you
- someone who posts in a ship's tag about disliking the ship
- an eternal enemy who is pure evil and a complete lunatic and must be destroyed

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
An anti-shipper is someone who disagrees on the pairing-up of two (or more) characters.

Someone who is a more extreme antishipper might display negative qualities regarding a ship they don't like such as talking badly about it unnecessarily and the people who ship it, e.g. calling them bad people, saying they have shit taste, and in some cases even setting up an anti-ship fanclub (lol). I feel those actions are what give anti-shippers their bad reputation.

Someone who has the unmitigated gall not to love your OTP.

Anyone who doesn't like your favourite ship, generally speaking.

I...can kind of see this?

I might be a shipper in my current fandom, but I'm omnivorous when it comes to fic, so I'll read stories about pairings I don't particular ship or like.

I'm hesitant to give feedback on stories outside of my ship (good or concrit) because I'm afraid the writer might take it the wrong way.

If it's on AO3 I will anonymously hit kudos if I like the story, though. I once did it while signed in and got a really weird reaction from the author as a result because they knew I shipped the opposite pairing and thought I was...idk...making fun of them? Being sarcastic? I'm not really clear what they thought, but they definitely didn't think it was genuine.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
this is so wild

what fandom was this in?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I'm always delighted to find out that someone who doesn't really like my ship enjoyed my fic anyway. It means my writing was good enough to engage someone who doesn't have the built in emotional investment of a shipper, and that gives me no end of warm fuzzies.

TIL some fanfic writers checks their single kudos

I can't be hassled to remember my own nickname half the time, how does people even remember single users?

Usually I'm just grateful for any kudos on my work, I don't really give a fuck if the person leaving it it's not an actual shipper of the pairing in question, that seems a tad obsessive....

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean on the one hand you're not obligated to give kudos or anything when you like a fic.

But on the other hand that just seems like a petty reason not to.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I came here to say this.

If you enjoy the writing, at least give a kudos, OP. You can do it anonymously if you want, but it's bullshit to withhold positive feedback on an author who worked hard on a story that you enjoyed.

Good to see you're the reasonable one with regards to feelings about fictional relationships

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You're pure class, OP. I wish I had as much dignity as you do.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If this person simply doesn't like your ship and has posted once or twice, in their own space, politely explaining why, then I think giving them kudos is the right thing to do.

But if they've gone beyond "I don't like this ship and here's why" to "Your ship sucks, you people should stop shipping it, ugh it's so awful and annoying" then yeah, I'd snub them on the kudos too.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...I literally wrote this, word for word, is the GC a while ago. This feels really weird.

But assuming that you're not a troll, I'm sorry that this is true for someone else. The author is gross human being, and I wish I hadn't known that before I was recced their work. (And I've stopped keeping up with the author's fics.)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people on this community who make and submit multiple secrets every week. Sometimes they borrow something from the GC and make a secret out of it. I don't think they're trolling, it's just gathering more secret material.

I'm just surprised you've found an anti who actually writes readable fic. In my experience, dedicated anti-shippers rarely contribute thoughtful fic/art/meta to fandom, preferring to "contribute" lectures and issuefic.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's be real here, that describes 95% of OTPers too. It's almost like large chunks of fandom are big on performative shouting, and not so big on writing readable fic.

Okay?

As someone who writes fic and also has NOTP's, I don't give a shit? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just as I'm not entitled to kudos or comments, you're not entitled to give them out either so...?

What an anti actually is

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
There seem to be a couple people commenting on this secret who think that people use "anti" to mean "person who doesn't ship my OTP," and...no. Not even remotely. While they do show up in shipwars, antis are a particular kind of NOTP-er; specifically, they're a community dedicated to chasing people out of the fandom under the guise of social justice leanings. A lot of them are proud to call themselves antis, so they're pretty easy to spot, if the suicide-baiting and troll fics and dedicated hating communities and blacklists don't give them away.

Popular battle cries of your modern anti:

- Shipping an adult/teen pairing in Yuri on Ice or Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom: you will now be accused of being a pedophile

- Shipping Rey/Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens fandom: you're an abuse apologist

- Shipping anything except Finn/Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens: you're a racist (ignoring another popular pairing of Finn/Poe, two non-white men). Also, this fandom is a special case, in that the anti-racist crowd actually succeeded in chasing a writer out of fandom for the horrible crime of writing Finn/Poe sex pollen fic.

There are many more fandoms they've infected, but these are some big ones. Also, since being anti-pairing isn't enough, there are also antis that are against entire canons, notably Captive Prince and Stranger Things (Stranger Things dared to be more popular than the Get Down and deserves hate, even though the two are wildly different shows.)

Anyway: antis are nuts. Steer clear of them when you see them, because there's no reasoning with them.
