One thing I've noticed about fic

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing I've noticed is that in the rare occasions when a fic will make me go "Wow, this story is REALLY amazing, I need to check out what else the writer wrote!"... it will turn out to be a writer I already knew from a different fandom and whose entire ficlist I've already read.

It seems like there's only a handful of really, really good and mature fanwriters who consistently write novel length stories with good characterization, interesting plots, engaging character archs, original storylines...

Made me appreciate their work even more, as well as wish I could do more to show my appreciation than leave a comment or a kudos.

A handful, really? Because I'm always surprised at the quantity and quality of the novel-length fics I find. It helps that I'm very, very multifandom, I guess, and there are definitely certain authors that I recognise from several different fandoms, but it's not enough to make me wonder if they are the only good writers that exist in fandom.

I'm always finding new authors, if only because I'll come across someone I've never shared a fandom with before. And I am not always looking for mature plot heavy novel length stories, there are so many other options with fanfic! I like them all!

If you think about it your sample is biased. You only know about the fanwriters you've read, how do you know the people writing for fandoms or dynamics you're not interested in aren't just as good?

I've had this happen before, where I read a cool fic only to realize it's an author I love from another fandom.

But just as often it's been an author who's fics I didn't like in that other fandom. And then I'm pleasantly surprised and confused about why they nailed one set of characters so well and fucked up with the other so badly.
