I'd never heard of them, so read wiki

so wait, they get their superpowers from super-heroin? but then they're supposed to be anti-drug vigilantes? so it's a comic about how drugs give you super powers but then you have to use those super powers to get rid of drugs?

Hey, from the company that gave you the idea that pumping your own soldiers full of steroids is how you win a war and be a perfect human.

Yeah, this isn't a new thing with them. Gotta look at the era of their creation. Drugs were the big social evil that needed fighting.

Ah, somehow missed the era. Makes sense

Yeah the 1980s, when the top bad guys for America were:

1. nazis (metaphorical or otherwise)
2. communists, of differing ethnicities but almost always with a Russian behind it all
3. urban drug lords

Never mind that the American history of foreign policy ratfucking involved giving weapons to communists to fight nazis, and then to drug profiteers to fight the communists.

Every now and then you'd get Suburban Satanism (metaphorical or otherwise) as a diversion.

This is really overly simplistic. We also gave weapons to nazis and Islamic extremists to fight communists.

That is true.

Another data point was that mass media got a lot of heat from pearl-clutching interest groups about children and gratuitous sex and violence. (The PG-13 rating was created in 1984 for context.) So there was a lot of "hey this is wholesome, they're beating up bad people" going on in the 80s.
