I don't know about "blew my mind" but I was really surprised Akame ga Kill ended up subverting a lot of tropes. I kind of expected it to be a typical anime.

Edge of Tomorrow. Such a fantastic movie!

Buffy. In my defense, I mostly knew it from teen magazines, and they made it sound like the most bimbo show ever. They were actually trying to say how great it was. Here is basically how they described it:

"Buffy is like totally a vampire slayer and there's this Angel guy then there's a Spike guy and then Willow totally goes lesbian and out of nowhere Buffy has a sister and like OMG awesome totally cool show."

So I had no idea why all my nerdy friends loved it. Then I finally watched it, and understood why.

Yeah, it's one of those shows you have to watch to get into, I think. It's a bit inconsistent, but it has its moments.

I remember having so much trouble getting friends into Buffy back in the day. On the surface they all thought it looked stupid but then every one of them who eventually watched it ended up loving it.

I've had similar experiences with other shows/movies. I guess the guys who get paid to make the ads have very strong ideas about what appeals to audiences lol.

Moulin Rouge. My mom wanted to go see it and asked if I wanted to go with and I said sure, why not. I think I just thought it was a period romantic drama. I had no idea it was a musical or that it would get so playful and goofy at times or would have so many shiny, pretty costumes. It was during "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" song that I went "WTF *is* this? This is *amazing!*) I never got super into the movie like some people I know did, but it was way more fun that I had expected going in.
