Underrated movies

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-04-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
What movies do you think are extremely underrated? Inspired by Event Horizon which is an awesome scifi/horror movie that should have gotten better reviews.

I enjoyed Age of Adeline, which surprised me because it isn't the type of thing I usually like. I loved Source Code until the end. Ugh, the end still makes me mad. The Adjustment Bureau was great.

I will agree with you about Source Code! Kinda weird that he took on someone else's life indefinitely!

Definitely About Time.
I left the cinema with something in my eye, okay. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I love About Time.

I really liked The Adjustment Bureau and own it on DVD, but I haven't watched it since it was in theatres. I also like 13 Going on 30 a lot.

(I saw Source Code, but I don't remember the ending.)

Pontypool. Such a fantastic zombie horror movie that so few people have seen. :(

Hmm I am not into horror or jumpscares but this sounds intriguing... Do you think it has appeal for people who don't watch horror?

Probably. There is SOME gore but not as much as there usually is in a zombie film. And I don't want to give away too much but it has a really unique look on zombies.

Okay I'm sold, BF is into horror so he'll be happy to watch it with me. Thanks!

Brother Bear is a very underrated but an absolute gem of a movie. The characters are good, the central theme of family is wonderful and the animation is gorgeous. And it has one of the best transformation scenes:

Event Horizon gave me the worst nightmares of anything I saw during my childhood. *shudder*

I can see that. I totally get why some people like to headcanon that it is in the Warhammer 40K universe. I don't usually like things that graphic, but plotwise it is exactly up my alley.

Uhh, don't know if I should be ashamed to admit this or something but: The Village. I thought the aesthetics were great (parts of it were filmed near my home town), and there were some really lovely character moments in there that added substance to the story, like the way that the blind girl figured out that the Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt characters were in love because, while they were freely affectionate with other people, they never touched each other. There were a lot of little moments like that.

And along the same line: Signs. Maybe because I was religiously devout when I saw it, but I didn't find the "miracle" ending contrived at all, and ~plot holes~ like "why did the hydrophobic aliens land on a planet that was 70% water" didn't mean shit to me, anymore than scientific explanations of fairytale magic mean shit to me. (Midichlorians, anyone?) Who cares, it was part of the premise, I just rolled with it.

Arthur Christmas, Rise of the Guardians, and Home are three that come to mind. They were all very enjoyable.

I knooow! Cute story, neat worldbuilding, breathtaking animation, it deserved so much more recognition.

+1 on Rise of the Guardians, although I didn't like the protagonist much. But all the supporting characters were awesome! Sandy was and is the best, of course.

"All I Wanna Do" I had no idea this film existed until 2 days ago. It has some great actors when they were young (Kirsten Dunst, Gaby Hoffman, Rachel Lee Cook, Matthew Laurence, and the best role I've ever seen him in Vincent Kartheiser) and is a coming of age film about a group of girls who go to an all girls' school in the 1960s. It's one of the good coming age films that falls into some cliche tropes of this subgenre but then the good stuff is really good, and it's pretty funny. Considering it was a late 90s teen film it is one of the better ones. Definitely recc people to check it out.

I also have a headcanon that this is really how Pete Campbell from Mad Men lived his life before working at Sterling Cooper. I know Pete's TRUE past, hiding it like Don hid his. LMAO
