Asian dramas with gay characters (preferably not BL)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any Asian drama series (I know there will probably not be much if anything from Korea or China because censorship) with gay characters? Especially of the "happens to be gay" variety, not BL series (I usually think those are pretty badly made and cringey).

I literally just saw a listing for one that was on Amazon Prime. No idea if it's good or not, but apparently it exists. Lemme look it up.

This is what I was thinking of, apparently:

Movie, not TV show, but

By dramas do you mean exclusively TV shows? And by not BL, you mean nothing inspired from like a BL manga and marketed toward fujoshi audiences?

I watch more films than TV shows, so I'd also be interested in recs, but I know I've seen quite a few gay films. From Korea, too - I don't think there's censorship there of gay stuff there? Not sure what you mean by that. Anyway, a Japanese one I watched recently was, warning, based off a BL manga - but it's not fetishy, one of the characters explicitly identifies as gay, there's no rape, and the characters are working adults. It's called Doushitemo Furetakunai, I really enjoyed it. The actors are really good, too, which is also a rarity among BL-adaptations.

Yeah, movies are okay too, but I've seen a lot of them so I wasn't really searching in that area. With TV dramas, there are just so many, it's difficult to sift through it.
And yes, non-BL as in "not a BL manga adaption" - there are quite a few, especially from Japan, and maybe I just found the wrong ones but the ones I tried looked pretty cringey. I'd mostly love something that wasn't a romance/relationship centered show, but that might be a bit too much to ask...

Oh, but Korea is pretty iffy on censorship when it comes to gay content (especially m/m gay content). At least for TV shows. Koreans dramas with gay characters can be counted on one hand, I think. And with movies, it's pretty telling that the few gay characters that are there tend to die in more or less gruesome ways.

I think I have seen the one you mentioned around, I'll give it a try! Thanks!

Horror movies

Horror movies on Netflix/Amazon/HBO. No gore porn, please! Looking for more psychological stuff. I've seen a lot of horror movies so looking for those hidden gems.

This topic comes up a lot. It'd help if you gave some examples of movies you've already seen (especially because you've already seen a lot of them) and gave examples of what you liked/disliked.

I'm assuming american netflix? I'll go through the list

Sinister, it follows, i haven't seen Stephen King's Thinner but I know the story and think it should fit, we are still here, hush, the hallow, hellions, when animals dream, let us prey, the babadook, housebound, honeymoon (the one with one of the treadaway twins and ygritte from game of thrones), children of the corn, pontypool (though i hated the twist i loved the whole ~feel of it)

Not proper horrors but movies in the horror section that i nevertheless recommend: the host, tucker abd dale vs evil, john dies at the end, trollhunter, wyrmwood

International Movies

Pros if they're on US Netflix.

My only requirement is that if, not in English, there are subtitles available.

Otherwise just hit me up with a name and I can probably find it.

I always love Run Lola Run and Goodbye Lenin. They're both German movies, but I don't know if they're on Netflix as I have them on DVD. I really love the music of both, but they are stylistically very different.

No idea if any of these are on Netflix, but they might be? Maybe you can find them on youtube if no.

Das Experiment (German thriller movie about an experiment similar to the Stanford Prison Experiment.)
Brother (Брат) (I remember liking this, but it's been too many years since I've seen it to say for sure? Very famous/popular movie in Russia, considered to be kind of a definitive look at the post-Cold War period.)
How I Ended This Summer (Как я провёл этим летом) (Arctic survival drama type movie.)
Ballad of a Soldier (Баллада о солдате) (This is a very old movie so maybe not to everyone's taste, but it's good if you like retro cinema kinds of stuff?)

And for something more fun:
Winnie the Pooh / Винни-Пух
