I'm over 30 and generally agree with your sentiment. I know what Twilight is, obviously, but I wouldn't reference it out of nowhere unless it was a joke or very relevant like the subject is vampires or romance books.

People seem to be interpreting your secret as saying nobody over 30 is aware of Twilight, for some reason??

I'm in my twenties but I interpreted the secret the same way you did. Obviously Twilight is infamous at this point, but I agree that "the 40-ish dude in your favorite slash fic" OP mentions would in many cases be unlikely to reference it out of the blue, despite being aware of its infamy. It's an issue of understanding the character you're writing about. Greg House would absolutely make jokes about Twilight, but would Aaron Hotchner?

I think people are getting hung up on the age thing (if it were me, I might have left that out).

Regardless, you can't throw pop culture references around in your fic like grass seed. You have to think about whether that's really what would spring to that particular character's mind, and try not to project yourself onto the character so much.

I'm 38 and know what Twilight is, too, but I'm not likely to reference it and I can go months without thiking about it.
