I think one of the issues is that many people assumed Twilight was adored mostly by thirteen year olds. I knew a lot of people well over thirteen who loved Twilight. In fact, I think there were more 20-40 year old fans than teenage fans.

That might be true, but I don't think many dudes that age went unless they were dragged with their girlfriends.

Though I must confess I know nothing about Twilight, your comment on Harry Potter made me laugh out loud. Im 47 and I have spent a lot of time thinking, writing fanfic, and reading, when it comes to that fandom.

I get a feeling you must be a rather young person.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
okay? you being an outlier doesn't disprove OP's point.

The amount of butthurt Harry Potter fans seem to experience over being reminded that not everyone is as big a fan as they are never ceases to amuse me.

I get the feeling you must have only discovered fandom through Harry Potter.

I and my wife are both 47, and we're both big Harry Potter fans. Heck, my wife doesn't generally read books, and the only ones she's actually read are Harry Potter and the Da Vinci Code stuff.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like you've never watched the Parks and Recreation episode where Will Forte tries to put Twilight in the time capsule

smh

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
while 42 and can confirm, the only things I know about Twilight are from internet memes and F!S, I'd give some leeway for characters who would spend a damn lot of time on the internet in the present day. you pick up a lot through internet osmosis.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the 30something below, and confirmed, I know everything I know about Twilight from internet memes.

On the other hand, I'm 30something. I'm not going to spout internet memes out loud at random. Unless the character is... the type to do that, it's a little unbelievable.

Same - I'm 44, only saw the first movie, never read the books, and yet can tell you the entire plot thanks to cleolinda's recaps and game of "horrify the Twilight noob".

This. I've never read the books or seen the movies, but I know those vampires sparkle because of the memes I've seen.

Lots of people know about pop culture references. That doesn't mean they're in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm over 30 and generally agree with your sentiment. I know what Twilight is, obviously, but I wouldn't reference it out of nowhere unless it was a joke or very relevant like the subject is vampires or romance books.

People seem to be interpreting your secret as saying nobody over 30 is aware of Twilight, for some reason??

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in my twenties but I interpreted the secret the same way you did. Obviously Twilight is infamous at this point, but I agree that "the 40-ish dude in your favorite slash fic" OP mentions would in many cases be unlikely to reference it out of the blue, despite being aware of its infamy. It's an issue of understanding the character you're writing about. Greg House would absolutely make jokes about Twilight, but would Aaron Hotchner?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are getting hung up on the age thing (if it were me, I might have left that out).

Regardless, you can't throw pop culture references around in your fic like grass seed. You have to think about whether that's really what would spring to that particular character's mind, and try not to project yourself onto the character so much.

I'm 38 and know what Twilight is, too, but I'm not likely to reference it and I can go months without thiking about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the sparkling, specifically, is pretty notorious.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but would a 40 year old dude's first reaction to seeing something sparkle be "that's just like Twilight!" though? I find this hard to believe.

Mostly among people who already cared about vampires though.

I don't think age would necessarily make it out of character as I'm mid thirties and I knew a ton of people my age and older who were into both Twilight and Harry Potter.

I think it's more about the character though, if a character has other similar nerdy interests then I can buy it. But if twilight is literally the one thing in that genre that has ever come up then it would seem ooc.

[personal profile] randomdrops 2017-04-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this has nothing to do with age, but more just about the character generally. I know plenty of people 30+ that will make Twilight or Harry Potter or other type references, and it's not necessarily a guarantee they've read the books but more just it's become cultural jokes/knowledge in lots of circles.

I get your point, and agree that it would be wildly out of character for certain characters to be referencing, I just don't think age is the defining factor here.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight WAS a massive cultural phenomenon, whether you want it to count as one or not. The sparkly vampires were one of the most famous things about it, because so many fans of traditional vampires mocked the hell out of it.

Depends if this dude spends time overthinking popculture in general and if he lived during the hype period.

Me and friends spent time wondering how vampirism there even worked and how babies or boners happened (but those magic boners are everywhere in vampire genre). I was the youngest and the oldest was not a friend but in his 60s and straight.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha all i remember from this scene is that the night before he'd been told he was doing a shirtless scene but he hadnt worked out for it at all so he just ate all the cubed cheese at the mini bar and wore the fake abs the next day of filming

I don't know, the sparkly thing was pretty infamous at one point.

And thinking about guys in shows I watch, pretty much a toss-up whether they would know or not. It wouldn't surprise me if any of the characters on NCIS: LA mentioned it. I could see any of the guys on Hawaii Five-0 saying something about it, even if they only got their knowledge of it from Jerry. Just, it was a pretty big phenomena and a lot of people have tangential knowledge of it. And even if they didn't know a thing about it, they easily could have interacted with someone who did, couldn't they?
