while 42 and can confirm, the only things I know about Twilight are from internet memes and F!S, I'd give some leeway for characters who would spend a damn lot of time on the internet in the present day. you pick up a lot through internet osmosis.

I'm the 30something below, and confirmed, I know everything I know about Twilight from internet memes.

On the other hand, I'm 30something. I'm not going to spout internet memes out loud at random. Unless the character is... the type to do that, it's a little unbelievable.

yes, precisely. so, upshot being, I'm sure OP has a point about the actual percentage of over-40 males who spend a lot of time on the internet and would think in meme terms about anything. while still being a superhero, soldier, cop, or whatever the hell else they are in canon.

Yeah. More likely if someone brings up sparkling vampires, the guy might go "oh yeah, I heard that before. Twilight or something, right?" but to reference it all on his own, the odds are pretty damn long unless he's already established as a geeky or fandomy person.

I agree. The secret also says "in their thoughts" and while people will talk about all kinds of things when they come up in conversation, are they likely to think, all alone in their head, without any prompting, "That's like Twilight?"

Maybe the answer is yes, they are... but maybe not. It's something to think about for each character rather than making blanket assumptions based on how popular something was.

Same - I'm 44, only saw the first movie, never read the books, and yet can tell you the entire plot thanks to cleolinda's recaps and game of "horrify the Twilight noob".

This. I've never read the books or seen the movies, but I know those vampires sparkle because of the memes I've seen.

Lots of people know about pop culture references. That doesn't mean they're in the fandom.
