I think this has nothing to do with age, but more just about the character generally. I know plenty of people 30+ that will make Twilight or Harry Potter or other type references, and it's not necessarily a guarantee they've read the books but more just it's become cultural jokes/knowledge in lots of circles.

I get your point, and agree that it would be wildly out of character for certain characters to be referencing, I just don't think age is the defining factor here.
