I think the biggest problem was when Davies was forced to drop all of his plots by the new production team--which is why 4 marked a big change in the series (New production team or by so many actors leaving). The Hales had a pretty good story, but without a natural conclusion it was kind of weird watching the plot line be "Derek's mistakes screw over Scott and co" even after Derek was relieved of Brooding Bad Guy status.

I liked the show with Derek, mostly because I really don't care about the baby betas (I like them as baby betas, but not as vehicles for actual plot. It became pretty clear to me in seasons 3-4 that the writers/producers never actually understood why their show became popular).
