Re: 18 OP

I watched all of season one and most of season two (irregularly as we'd watch occasionally at my sister's boyfriends house,) and caught severl of the new episodes while channel surfing. You can't tell me in season 3 it suddenly developed a sense of humor (and not just a 'characters laugh at in show joke' kind of humor.)

Respectfully, I don't think it's fair to continue to debate this if you haven't caught up with everything. I don't mean that to sound elitist--I mean it in the sense that you don't know the whole story. However, you are free to believe what you want in terms of your "one note" opinion, since you haven't seen the episodes that would (in my opinion) likely change your perspective. The season 2 finale, for example, completely blew the fandom's mind. I'd try that, the first four of season 3, and the last four of season 3 (including "Maelstrom", which is an incredible piece of television work), and season 4. Whether they impact your opinion or not, you would definitely have more to go on than a season or two.

No no, I know where you're coming from. You're right, but you didn't answer my question. Does the show actually get a little funny or anything? You have to understand, I'm not looking for mind blowing drama, I was hoping that eventually it had some more realistic moments, not straight unrelenting drama.

Re: 18 OP

GOTCHA. Did it? Well, actually, yes (sorry, thinking out loud). There was some really fantastic stuff with Baltar being all awkward and naked on a Cylon basestar. Season 3 was lighter than seasons 1 & 2, due to a bunch of standalone episodes that the networked ordered. So I'd say yes, it did. Pardon my confusion on the humour front.

Thanks for being so polite, by the way! Many debaters I come across get quite rude and lol-tastic.

I like understanding people, and I loath the wank-loving habits of most people on the net. My secret came from a over-protective of my fandoms place, not an offensive against others place.

Why does it have to have comedy to be good?

Re: 18 OP

[identity profile] taste-is-sweet.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's been such an unrelenting barrage of angst, misery, pain, hopelessness, despair and death for, what, four seasons now? A little levity of any sort would be like blessed rain in an endless, bleak desert.

And yes, I'll admit I hated the show from the get-go, for the reasons above. And yes, I also admit it's incredibly well done. But I only watch it because my husband does, and I don't always feel like hiding in the bedroom to avoid the relentless gloom.

I also don't like that the monotheists are winning.

Re: 18 OP

But it was intentionally filmed as though it were a documentary about a disaster wiping out most of mankind. It's popular because it was treated realistically but was not meant to be an angst fest. It is not perfect though, to me the first and second seasons were the most successful. I liked the stories concerning the election, balance of power and the black market because those seemed like things that would really happen if people were forced to live that way for an extended amount of time.

The third season was good, but focused too much on bad romances and couples. I think that's were all the bad angst started. The fourth season is just plain terrible, except for the most recent episode. I also don't like the religious implications the show is making. I feel like it's degenerated into preachy, religious propoganda.

But I still watch it. I think I'm still watching the fourth season just to find out how it's all going to end.

I didn't mean comedy, I just meant something that makes me feel that these creatures do anything other then suffer and stand around looking heroic. I can't identify with any of them, even my friends who are actual Iraq war vets don't act like the characters. No one does. Even in the worst situations there is light. I can't identify with glowing drama-icons, and if I can't connect, I can't watch for too long.

Oh, so humor is the other note? It's a two-note universe out there?

You are right, this is not a humorous show, and if what you are looking for is humor, then you aren't going to get it. But that doesn't mean that it's flat because of it. Not every show has to be mixed genres. Personally I think it would detract from the serious themes of religious conflict, personal identity, male-female dynamics, power, responsibility, love, friendship, destiny, and tolerance, all of which are huge, essay worthy themes in this show.

Hmmm... Well that's a taste thing. Just because you don't identify with them doesn't mean that other people don't. Where you see them standing around being heroic, I see them wrestling with extremely difficult moral and personal issues -- and I happen to enjoy that. It's rare to see a show that really delves into bigger issues in an unflinching way, and presents them without dumbing them down or making the solution obvious.

Actually, it just sounds like you just don't like straight drama -- if ambiguity and layering of issues doesn't appeal to you, then the whole genre falls pretty flat. Probably want to steer clear from things like the crime drama genre.

Just because I like a little light in my dark does not mean I don't like ambiguity or layer of issues. I was remarking on a flaw I find with the characterizations NOT the whole show. In fact I adore shows like the Law and Order series, I just want something different from Sci-fi, well, at least long running sci-fi.

Re: 18 OP

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. Well, I'm not sure what you are complaining about. First is was that there wasn't humor, then you say, no that isn't it. Then you say you don't sympathize with the characters and neither does your friend in Iraq because it's grim. Now you say you are okay with grim, but just not in Science Fiction. Well, okay in science fiction but not in long running science fiction. To that all I can say is, cool for you, but why do you expect others to feel the same way?

Honestly, all I can say is that you aren't required to love everything -- but what you see as flaws, I see as a style choice, and I really don't think BSG would be improved if it was funny. I think it's one of the best science fiction series that has ever come out for pretty much the reasons you dislike it.

Re: 18 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-05-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not complaining. (For the record the Law and Order franchise isn't at all about the main characters, BSG is) And I didn't mean "grim" I meant unrealistic characterizations.

My *original* point was that it's not the best and it's overrated. The reasons I don't watch it anymore are irrelevant.

Re: 18 OP

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well. I respectfully disagree. I think it deserves the hype. The only better science fiction show out there was Babylon-5. BSG isn't quite at that level of perfection, but then that level is damn hard to reach.
