Latest fanfic disappointments

Tell me all about them!

So I was reading some pwp based on some scenario. One dude giving another dude a blowjob when suddenly, he rubbed his clit. There were zero tags about him being trans. Killed my mood real quick.

I wanted dicks, damnit. More dicks.

Went back to an old fandom to binge on some fic and it's not as great as I remember it being. I am feeling very dissatisfied.

Not OP

:(

Don't ever look back too closely. I started re-reading an old fic I loved, only to find it was not as good as I once thought it to be. I wonder if it was my age, the total exposition to fic entirely, or if my expectations and standards have risen. I'm afraid to look at other fics for this reason too.

DA

When it comes to fics I love(d) in fandoms that I've moved on from, I choose to believe that they really are things of beauty- I'm just looking at them from the wrong side now.

Lol. Obviously this can be scene as self-delusion, but...IDK.

What I know is: I felt a lot when I read the fic the first time. The author meant for me to feel a lot; I read their fic; I did feel a lot. Th fact that their writing made me feel what they intended me to feel - that was real, and it doesn't stop being real just because my perspective has changed. *shrugs*

Started cool fanfic with alien worldbuilding, and then they decided to make it a/b/o. Not for sexy reasons, just to provide a template for alien bigotry and Important Social Issues and why the main character is unjustly discriminated against for being an omega in an alpha's world.

When one of the latest updates the author's note started how they wrote up this huge info dump about the a/b/o society for the last chapter, but then realized it was clunky and hard to wade through and didn't flow very well so they took it out. ..... and were now posting it as its own huge chapter. I just stopped following the fic.

My reaction to reading this comment:

What fic is this, I need it. :D

Never mind. :/

AYRT - Same. I kept going after the tags were updated because I am totally not opposed to the sexpollen family of smut tropes. But when they're spending multiple paragraphs explaining in detail that there are bathrooms for alphas, and for omegas, and also for females and the characters thoughts on that for safety vs. equality and does that encourage society's idea that alphas aren't responsible for their aggressive behavior...... Nah, I'm out.

Canon character development has taken Character I Loved into territory where I've fallen out of love with him. But I still really love his earlier stuff and my own headcanons for how I thought he'd develop.

I'm still really wishy-washy on if I continue to write my headcanon of him despite it now being OOC. I have a whole list of pros and cons.

To complicate things, I feel guilty because a lot of my favorite Steve/Tony writers seem to be in the same boat of having developed characterizations that were comic/early movie hybrids and now canon Steve and Tony are nothing at all like that. So I'm watching them flounder and try to navigate fanon vs. canon and just wishing they'd kept on with the fanon versions I love. But at the same time I know really, really well why they'd feel awkward writing Best Friends To Lovers Happy Avengers Tower Full Of Wacky Friends 'Verse stuff after CW.

Wow. I'm a huge Johnlock shipper, and this fits my experience to a T. My condolences, OP, it's a sucky situation to be in with a pairing/fandom.

Personally I'm very in favor of ignoring as much canon as you want and just embracing your headcanon and/or fanon. That said, I suppose it at least partially depends on how much your headcanon jibes with fanon. If there's canon, and then there's fanon, and then your headcanon is heavily different from both of those, I think people are less likely to recognize what you're doing and embrace it. Whereas if most of your headcanon lines up with fanon, then the chances are that a lot of the people who will read your fic will be in the same boat as you and will be happy to get to read a fic that recaptures what it is they loved about the pairing to begin with.

For my part, whenever I go back and reread a Johnlock fic written in the early days of fandom, I always have this strong sense of nostalgia and also of being reminded what got me into the fandom in the first place, and I end up thinking, "Why don't more people still write Johnlock like this? Can't we just do a fandom restore to back before the crappy new updates reconfigured everything? "
