Desensitization and escalation are things, OP. Maybe you should dial back.

Eh

Personally, nothing gets my creativity going quite like darkness. If you're worried, just watch yourself, OP!

If you're concerned, take a break from fandom, anon. Even if it turns out that you're fine and it's no big deal, then there's no harm done.

I think it's taking over more and more of your life because fandom is SO accessible because of the internet and social media. If you're worried, now might be a good time to unfollow some people or take a break and evaluate why you're seeking this stuff out and what you're getting out of it that you're not getting irl.

I tended to gravitate towards darker and darker stuff as my depression was getting worse and worse. Now it's gone and now I can't stand all that shit.

Could be a phase. I remember getting into darker stuff for a while before gravitating towards lighter stuff afterwards. If you think this might take a toll on your mental health then consider taking a break from fandom and ponder on why you're getting into darker stuff. Sometimes the solution might simpler than you think.

I don't think being drawn towards 'dark things' is necessarily a bad thing at all. I'm drawn towards dark things, including fic, and personally see it as a way of working through the darker aspects of this world. Also, when I expressed concern to a friend about my interest in 'dark' writing, she said that isn't nothing to be concerned about. There are truly awful, dark and twisted things that can be found on the internet and deep web, for people who truly need psychological help. Fanfiction, even the 'darker' type, is usually pretty innocuous.

In other words, OP, I think you're fine. I'd say you're just working through some things, at the moment, in your psyche and this is just one way of doing it. I'd also say a pretty healthy way.

You know, I used to absolutely love dark fic - noncon, torture, general fucked up shit. However, I find at some point I kind of grew out of it to a certain extent. I still enjoy well-written dark stuff, but it's not something I'll purposely seek out just for the sake of reading it.

If you don't think it affects your regular life or personality, I wouldn't really worry about it.

I've always been interested in really dark things, and when people first meet me they're always shocked to find out I'm into really disturbing shit because apparently I come across as "wholesome and innocent" so I guess it must not affect my personality that much.

This could be a few things.

It could just be you exploring your boundaries to find out where your hard limits are. It could be that you're looking for something new that you haven't seen before. It could be that you're drawn to something you find in dark media and fics you usually don't find other places, like a certain sort of fatalism or something. It could be a lot of things, but if you're really worried, why don't you try to figure out what exactly it is you like about them?

Who cares, it's just fanfic. Stop listening to tumblr twats.
