Yep. Sad story, that.

It is tragic, but I always wonder about Smeagol and if there wasn't something off about him to begin with. He killed Deagol and I don't think it was solely the ring's influence. Even so, there was always something about how Smeagol described grandmother and what happened afterwards that made me think there was way more to the story.

It's still good Frodo and Bilbo showed mercy to him. He deserved that.

Not to mention, didn't he immediately start using the ring to do bad things and antagonize people? Bilbo had it for a while, and didn't do that. Smeagol at least seems to have been more susceptible to its corruption than other people.

It's Samwise's fault. Tolkien himself said Gollum would have repented if not for the fat fuck

I legit teared up at the chapter in TTT when he argues with the two sides of his nature. Tolkien wrote that beautifully.

It's just so sad. I tell myself that he was enough of a dick to immediately murder someone for the ring, when Frodo carried it for so long while retaining his goodness but even so, damn. The scene where he's watching the hobbits sleep and Sam wakes up and tells him off JUST BEFORE he's about to have the realisation that he wants to be friends with them, not hurt them breaks my heart every single time.

Tolkien wrote in one of his letters that Gollum could never be redeemed (for Catholic theological reasons, basically), but, you know, death of the author, and all that.
